2007 Rebounds Fall League–October 29, 2007

NEPTUNE, NJGMC Hoops was unable to travel out to Rebounds in Neptune on Monday night due to the playoffs that were going on in the 2007 HawksBasketball Fall-Ball Classic in Plainfield. Nevertheless, the web site was able to obtain the results of games played via the HoopGroup web site. It was a split night for the Greater Middlesex Conference teams competing in this league. While Cardinal McCarrick and South Brunswick won their games in Division A, both South Amboy and East Brunswick lost their games in Division B. First, in Division A, Cardinal McCarrick rebounded from its upset loss at the hands of Red Bank Catholic with a victory over Toms River East in a game played on the Knicks Court at 8:00 PM. Meanwhile, the Caseys of RBC, which came into the night with an identical 5-1 record, but owned the tiebreaker over Cardy Mac due to the head to head win, lost to Asbury Park in a game played at 7:00 PM over on the Nets Court. As a result, the Eagles moved back up into second place with a 6-1 record overall, and that sets up a showdown next week against undefeated Neptune in the Showcase Games. Taking a look at the Vikings, South Brunswick won its third straight after losing its first four games of the fall with a victory over St. John Vianney of Holmdel, and will take on Lacey from Ocean County in their Showcase game at 7:00 PM on Monday night over on the Sixers Court.

In other action from Division A, the Fliers of Neptune moved up to 7-0 on the fall by defeating Freehold Township, a school that knocked off the Fliers in the headlining game during Showcase Week last season. The Patriots, which are rebuilding after a stellar season last year, dropped to 1-6 on the fall. This fall, Neptune accumulated its unblemished record by defeating the likes of the following teams: St. Rose, Red Bank Catholic, Manasquan, Point Pleasant, St. John Vianney, Toms River East, and Freehold Township. The only other team that is undefeated in this league resides in Division B, and that is Middletown South. The Eagles, which qualified for the North Jersey Section 2 Group III State Tournament last season after winning only two games the year before, has defeated Ocean, Southern Regional, Henry Hudson, Marlboro, South Amboy, Lacey, and G-Force Stallions. Middletown South will face off against Asbury Park in their Showcase Week game at 9:00 PM over on the Celtics Court, Monday, November 5th.

Speaking of Division B, our two other GMC teams in this league went down to defeat this past Monday night. South Amboy faced off against Group IV and Class A North member of the Shore Conference, Howell, which entered action with only one loss on the fall. A win for the Guvs would have put them in a tie with the Rebels, and the Gold Division team would have been able to get a higher position in the Showcase by virtue of the head to head tiebreaker. Unfortunately though, Howell was able to pull out the win, and moved up to 6-1 overall while South Amboy dropped to 4-3. Next week, Howell will square off against St. Rose in its final game over on the Knicks at 8:00 PM whereas the Guvs will play their showcase matchup versus Lincroft. Meanwhile, East Brunswick took on Lacey of Ocean County in a game pitting two 3-3 teams against each other. After the Bears had won three of four to move up to 3-2 overall a couple weeks ago, they lost their second straight at the hands of Lacey to drop to 3-4. While Lacey will face a stern challenge in a South Brunswick team that has been playing much better from earlier in the fall, East Brunswick will take on Manasquan in a battle of two 3-4 teams.
