Immaculata Fall League–November 15, 2009

SOMERVILLE, NJ–On Sunday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to Immaculata High School again to take in the 7:15 PM game from the eighth and final week of action in the fall league there. As mentioned previously, there are 18 teams competing in this league including five from the Greater Middlesex Conference.

This league involves teams from five different counties including Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, and Somerset. Unfortunately, on this night, the web site was not able to see some GMC teams in action. However, thanks to Chris Fox, we were able to get the results from all the games as well as the final standings.

On this night, the site saw only one contest, and it involved teams from the Mid-State 39/Watchung Conference, and the Colonial Valley Conference. Both Westfield and West Windsor-Plainsboro North were looking to end their fall season on a positive note while building some momentum towards the first practices of the season after Thanksgiving. The Blue Devils, which struggled for much of the fall, would come away the victor in this one.

Westfield Emerges Victorious In Contentious Battle, 56-52

After being at work on Sunday, GMC Hoops headed over to Immaculata High School to catch the remainder of the final game of the evening between the Blue Devils of Westfield and the Knights of West Windsor-Plainsboro North. It was the first time this season that the site saw Westfield in action while it was the second time this fall that the site saw West Windsor-Plainsboro North. The Knights entered the contest with a record of 2-5 while the Blue Devils came in at 1-6. The contest was a tightly played affair with neither team having a lead greater than seven points although there was only one tie and one lead change over the final 17:31 of the contest.

GMC Hoops joined the action with 17:31 left in the game, and the score tied at 31-31. Neither team scored over the next 1:05 before the Knights called for time at the 16:26 mark. Following the timeout, Westfield went ahead essentially for good when a Blue Devil player penetrated through the middle, and kicked out to the right wing for a three pointer, and a 34-31 lead with 16:15 to go. After getting a stop on defense, the Blue Devils came back down for another score on an inbounds to the right side that set up a baseline drive for a floater, and a 36-31 lead at the 15:27 mark. There was a lull in the scoring for nearly a minute and a half before Westfield made it a 7-0 run with an inbounds pass for a layup at the 14:02 mark that put the score at 38-31.

West Windsor-Plainsboro North put an end to its scoring drought of 4:24 with a pass into the middle for a nice move in the form of a power dribble and spin for a layup, and a 38-33 score with 13:07 to go. Westfield scored again nearly a minute later thanks to a one of two showing from the foul line for a 39-33 lead at the 12:15 mark. The Knights then drew closer with a three pointer for a 39-36 Blue Devil lead with 10:29 remaining. On the ensuing possession, Westfield connected on a jumper for a 41-36 advantage at the 10:15 mark. West Windsor-Plainsboro North had a chance to close the gap, but misfired on two free throws at the 9:37 mark. The Knights defense came up with a stop by getting a steal and calling timeout at the 9:07 mark. During the timeout, the officiating crew, which had its hands full at times, ejected a Westfield player.

Following the stoppage, West Windsor-Plainsboro North pulled within three again with a baseline drive from the right side to make the score, 41-38 with 8:22 left. A short time later, the Knights drew a foul, and went into the bonus, which resulted in two free throws that made the score 41-40 with 7:48 to go. Over the next minute though, Westfield kept the Knights at arm’s length with a jumper and a layup for a 4-0 run that made the score 45-40 at the 6:44 mark. West Windsor-Plainsboro North wouldn’t go away though as it came up with an offensive rebound and putback off a blocked shot that made the score 45-42 with 6:25 to go. Westfield had a chance to double its lead nearly a minute later, but after being fouled on a three point attempt, a Blue Devil player only made one of three from the line at the 5:37 mark.

The Knights then got an offensive rebound and putback at the 4:41 mark to get as close as two points at 46-44 with 4:41 left. However, they would get no closer as Westfield scored five straight points including a three pointer from the right corner at the 4:13 mark, and an offensive rebound and putback with 3:25 left for a 51-44 lead. From there, the Blue Devils were never threatened as they went on to win, 56-52. Both teams ended the fall at 2-6.

GMC Hoops would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Fox and Jim Dimino for their help in covering this league this season.

GMC Fall Hoops Update–November 19, 2009–Performance Versus Non-Conference Opponents

November 19, 2009 on 11:44 am | In Hoop Group Headquarters Fall League, Immaculata Fall League | Comments Off

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–Over the last two weeks of the fall season, the teams in the Greater Middlesex Conference that are participating in the two leagues being covered by GMC Hoops fared much better.

In the Showcase Round of Games at Rebounds, the GMC went 5-1 against against the Shore Conference. It was the best week the conference had all season in the Hoop Group Headquarters Fall League beating out the performance in week one where the conference went 4-2. Meanwhile, over at Immaculata, Raritan Valley Community College, and the Immaculate Conception School, the GMC went 4-1 including a 3-1 record against teams from the Skyland or Mid-State 39, and 1-0 against teams from the Colonial Valley Conference.

So far this fall at the Hoop Group Fall League, the six teams competing in that league are a combined 15-29, and 6-26 after the first week and last week of play versus non-conference foes. Take away Cardinal McCarrick’s 5-2 record, and you have a conference that is 10-27. Meanwhile, this season at Immaculata, the GMC is a combined 15-17 versus out of conference foes. This includes the solid 4-1 mark put together in Week #3. Put the performance in both leagues together, and you have a combined mark of 30-46. The Eagles of Cardy Mac are playing among the top with a 8-5 mark in both leagues combined versus non-conference opponents. Monroe and St. Joseph’s are 6-2 in the Immaculata league while East Brunswick is 5-2 at Rebounds against non-conference opponents. Take away those four teams, and you have a combined mark of 7-35. Here is how the 10 teams are doing:

  • Monroe (6-2)
  • St. Joseph’s (6-2)
  • East Brunswick (5-2)
  • Cardinal McCarrick (8-5)
  • Middlesex (1-3)
  • Spotswood (2-6)
  • South Brunswick (1-6)
  • Colonia (1-6)
  • South River (1-6)
  • South Amboy (1-7)

Here is the breakdown by conference:

  • Skyland Conference (12-14)
  • Shore Conference (15-25)
  • Colonial Valley Conference (3-2)
  • Independents (0-2)
  • Burlington County Scholastic League (0-2)
  • Northwest Jersey League (0-1)

This site often discusses the conference’s performance against schools from other conference because it is a key measuring stick of whether or not teams can win sectional or state championships. To do well within the county is one thing, but to do well beyond the borders of Middlesex County is another, and that is what makes a GMC team even more special.

Immaculata Fall League–November 8, 2009

November 12, 2009 on 11:45 am | In Immaculata Fall League | Comments Off

SOMERVILLE, NJ–On Sunday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to Immaculata High School again to take in the 7:15 PM game from the seventh week of action in the fall league there. As mentioned previously, there are 18 teams competing in this league including five from the Greater Middlesex Conference.

This league involves teams from five different counties including Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, and Somerset. For the fifth time this fall, the web site was able to see some GMC teams in action. In addition, thanks to Chris Fox, we were able to get the results from all the games as well as the updated standings.

On this night, the site saw only one contest, and it involved a team from the Greater Middlesex Conference as Cardinal McCarrick took on Franklin in a game that pitted the GMC against the Mid-State 39. Due to a scheduling conflict with work, the site was only able to see the final few minutes of the game. It was the second time that GMC Hoops saw Cardy Mac in action.

McCarrick Downs Franklin Behind Thomas And Rasar, 68-59

This game could be a preview of future matchups to come if Franklin can get into the Greater Middlesex Conference. The Warriors applied for membership in the conference back in February along with Wardlaw-Hartridge, but it was prevented to leave by the Skyland Conference a short time later. It has made an appeal to the NJSIAA, but that has yet to be ruled on. In other news surrounding the Warriors, former Bridgewater-Raritan head coach, Tim Ortelli, has taken the reigns over there in Somerset after being away from coaching for a season.

Both teams were looking for their fourth victory of the fall as the Eagles were coming off a 58-55 defeat at the hands of the host school Immaculata last week while Franklin was coming off a 63-50 victory over Westfield. The Eagles had started the fall with wins in their first three games before losing three straight to Hillsborough, Bridgewater, and Immaculata. Cardy Mac is playing in two fall leagues this season including IHS and the Hoop Group Headquarters Fall League. Franklin has been sort of up and down this season, but a victory would put them two games over .500.

The Eagles are coming off a fine season that saw them gain a GMCT Final Four berth for the third straight season. After reaching the GMC Tournament Final two years in a row, the Eagles were defeated by St. Joseph’s in the semifinals. In addition, to its efforts in the conference, Cardinal McCarrick returned to the Non-Public B Sectional Championship for the first time since 2005, where it lost to Trenton Catholic Academy (70-51). It was the first time the Eagles lost in the sectional championship in four appearances (1980, 2003, 2005, and 2009). In total, the Eagles went 20-7, and won the GMC White Division. It was the 11th time in the past 12 seasons that Cardinal McCarrick won at least a share of the division title. McCarrick has won championships in the GMC Gold, Blue, and White Divisions.

Franklin, on the other hand, has struggled as a program since reaching the heights of its Group III State Championship over Cranford in 2003, and a Tournament of Champions Semifinal appearance before losing to St. Patrick’s of Elizabeth. The Warriors have not been in the state tournament since 2005, and prior to that, had a first round exit in 2004, and a quarterfinal round departure in 2005.

Last season, the Warriors were 10-13 overall including a 5-5 record in the Skyland Conference’s Delaware East Division. In 2007-08, Franklin was 6-18 overall including a 2-8 mark in divisional play. There is talent over at FHS, and Ortelli is just the right person to harness it into success in the form of divisonal, county, and sectional championships. GMC Hoops got out of work late on Sunday night, and didn’t arrive over to the gym until there was four minutes remaining. However, there was still quite a bit of action in those final four minutes of play as Franklin refused to give up.

With 3:48 to go, Cardinal McCarrick led by a score of 59-52. The Eagles could have run some time off the clock, but threw the ball away with 3:30 remaining. Getting the ball with an opportunity to close within five, Franklin drew a foul, and went to the line in the bonus, but missed the front end of a one and one with about three minutes left. The Warriors then had another chance to creep closer, but after getting a steal, turned the ball over with 2:37 to play. After McCarrick called for time, the Warriors swiped another steal with 2:12 to go. Franklin then got a layup while being fouled, but misfired on the bonus foul shot for the traditional three point play, and a 59-54 McCarrick lead with 1:53 to go.

The Warriors were unable to get any closer though. With the ball, and a chance to pull within three, Franklin had the ball stolen by Craig Thomas, who handed out an assist to Dana Rasar, who scored a layup while being fouled. Although Rasar missed the bonus free throw for the conventional three point play, the Eagles now led, 61-54 with 1:09 to go. Thirteen seconds later, Thomas got the ball again, and drew a foul that produced free throws on both ends of the bonus for a 63-54 lead with 56 seconds left. On its next possession, Franklin got another basket while being fouled, but again missed the bonus foul shot for a 63-56 McCarrick lead with 51 seconds to play.

On the missed foul shot, Rasar got the rebound, and drew a foul that produced two foul shots with 49 seconds to go for a 65-56 lead. Thomas then added two more from the line with 18 seconds remaining for a 67-56 lead. The Warriors got their final points of the game on a three pointer with eight seconds left, and Rasar closed out the scoring with one of two from the line to round out the 68-59 victory. With the win, Cardinal McCarrick improved to 4-3 on the fall while Franklin dropped to 3-3. GMC Hoops will be back over at Immaculata High School this coming Sunday night to see the final games of the season.

Immaculata Fall League–November 1, 2009

November 11, 2009 on 1:45 pm | In Immaculata Fall League | Comments Off

SOMERVILLE, NJ–On Sunday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to Immaculata High School again to take in the final two games from the sixth week of action in the fall league there. As mentioned previously, there are 18 teams competing in this league including five from the Greater Middlesex Conference.

This league involves teams from five different counties including Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, and Somerset. For the fourth time this fall, the web site was able to see some GMC teams in action. In addition, thanks to Chris Fox, we were able to get the results from all the games as well as the updated standings.

On this night, the site saw one contest involving teams from the Greater Middlesex Conference while the other involved teams from the Mid-State 39 and Northwest Jersey League. In the first matchup, Mendham of Morris County was battling North Hunterdon while in the nightcap, the site saw a Cardinal McCarrick take on Immaculata.

Mendham Breezes Past North Hunterdon, 57-40

Our first game of the evening involved a contest between Morris County and Hunterdon County as the Minutemen of Mendham in West Morris took on North Hunterdon. Last season, Mendham went 25-3 overall including a 17-1 mark in conference play. The Minutemen won the Morris County Tournament Championship with a 61-39 victory over Madison, but lost in the Quarterfinals of the North Jersey Section 2 Group III bracket to eventual finalist and defending champion, Scotch Plains (53-38).

Meanwhile, the Lions of North Hunterdon showed dramatic improvement last year with a berth in the very tough North Jersey Section 2 Group IV bracket before losing in the opening round to eventual champion, Plainfield (70-57). North Hunterdon, which was 7-14 in 2007-08 including a 4-6 mark in division, went 11-12 overall including a 3-8 mark in the Skyland Conference’s Delaware West Division.

In this contest, Mendham showed why it has been among the best in Morris County year after year. The Minutemen jumped out to a 24-14 lead at halftime, and went on a 16-2 tear in the second half after the Lions scored the first four points of the second half to close within six. From there, Mendham, which defeated Middlesex (84-57) a week ago, was never threatened again as it won easily, 57-40. After trailing by ten at the intermission, North Hunterdon started the second half on a positive note with two jumpers that trimmed the deficit to 24-18 with 20:57 to go in the game.

Over the next 6:45, the Minutemen put the game away with 16 of the next 18 points including a field goal, and a pair of free throws for a 4-0 run at the 18:46 mark to take a 28-18 lead. Mendham then got a three point play at the 18:03 mark on a jumper from the left side while being fouled to make it a 7-0 run, and a 31-18 advantage. The West Morris squad then scored 9 of the next 11 points for a 40-20 lead with 14:12 to play. Over the next 7:56, North Hunterdon attempted to climb back into the contest with a 15-9 spurt including a three pointer from the right side to close to within 49-35 at the 6:16 mark, but the Minutemen wouldn’t let them get any closer after that.

Mendham closed out the game with an 8-4 run including a layup at the 3:18 mark for the 57-40 victory. With the win, Mendham improved to 5-1 overall on the fall, which is good enough for a second place tie in the league with Montgomery. Meanwhile, the Lions fell to .500 at 3-3. Both teams will be in action on Sunday night.

Mendham (4-1) 24 33 57
North Hunterdon (3-2) 14 26 40

Immaculata Survives Late Rally By McCarrick For Win, 58-55

It always seems that when GMC Hoops sees Immaculata in action, the Spartans always get entangled in a close contest. Their game against Cardinal McCarrick was no exception. Although this game didn’t go to overtime like the one against Monroe did a few weeks ago, Immaculata had to hang on as the Eagles rallied from a 53-43 deficit with only 2:53 to play with a 9-0 run to close within a point at the 1:05 mark of the second half. The Spartans would outscore the Eagles by a 5-3 margin to close out the game for the 58-55 victory. It would be McCarrick’s third straight loss after starting the fall at 3-0 in the Immaculata Fall League.

For the game, Immaculata connected on 19 of 41 shots for 46 percent including 2 of 3 from three point range while netting 18 of 26 at the line for 69 percent. On the other side of the ledger, McCarrick made 20 of 49 shots for 41 percent including 6 of 21 from three for 29 percent. The Eagles did well at the line making 9 of 12 shots. In other statistical areas, Immaculata had fewer turnovers (10-14), more rebounds (26-23) including offensive boards (11-9), and assists (15-10) while Cardy Mac had more steals (7-6) and blocks (3-0). Neither team drew a charge. The Spartans won the first half scoring with a 32-27 lead at the intermission, but the Eagles won the final 22 minutes of play with a 28-26 edge.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Dana Rasar, a sophomore transfer from St. Patrick’s, who helped them pull out an overtime victory over Southern Regional at the Hoop Group Headquarters fall league back on September 28th. Rasar, who got the game winning basket in that game, scored a team high 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting including a 4 of 7 showing from beyond the arc. Rasar also collected 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Chipping in for McCarrick was senior guard, Craig Thomas, who made 5 of 8 shots including a three pointer while sinking 3 of 4 from the line for 14 points along with 4 rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

Senior forward Mo Isaac picked up 9 points including a 5 of 6 effort from the line while pulling down 6 rebounds. In the first half, Immaculata made 12 of 21 shots including one of two from long distance while limiting Cardinal McCarrick to 9 of 24 field goals including 3 of 12 from three to take the five point lead at the break. The Eagles managed to keep things close by going 6 of 8 at the line while the Spartans were 7 of 12. Each team had four turnovers. Over the first 1:52 of the game, McCarrick jumped out to a 7-4 lead thanks to a three pointer, and a layup by Rasar, who also factored in the other score by handing out an assist on a layup by Isaac.

Rasar then connected on another three pointer after Immaculata scored for a 10-6 lead before the Spartans netted two from the line at the 18:18 mark to make it a two point game again. The Somerville based school then went ahead when it scored a layup while being fouled, and then got an offensive rebound and putback off the missed bonus free throw at the 18:00 mark. Immaculata then added another free throw before Cardy Mac called for time to avoid a turnover at the 14:50 mark of the first half. Robert Nunez (a point and two rebounds), got his only point of the game when he made one of two at the line for a 15-13 Spartan lead at the 14:35 mark.

Over the next 2:02, Immaculata made it an 11-3 spurt with a layup, and then two free throws at the 12:33 mark for a 19-13 lead. However, McCarrick would fight back with 7 of the next 12 points over a span of 6:47 including two field goals by Rasar, and a three pointer by Jeremy Cruz (2 of 5 FGs for 5 points and 2 rebounds) to close the gap to 24-20 with 6:46 to go in the half. IHS kept Cardy Mac at arm’s length though with a 6-2 burst over the next 2:51 including one of two from the line at the 3:55 mark for a 30-22 advantage. McCarrick rallied with a 5-2 showing over the balance of the period to pull within five at 32-27 at the intermission. In the half, Thomas made 2 of 5 shots and 3 of 4 from the line for 7 points along with 2 rebounds while Rasar made 5 of 8 shots including 2 of 5 from beyond the arc for 12 points as well as 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block.

In the second half, the Eagles shot better making 11 of 25 shots from the floor including 3 of 9 from long distance while limiting Immaculata to 7 of 20 from the field over the final 22 minutes. The Spartans actually started out strong wit a 5-2 run over the first 5:51 including a three pointer for a 37-29 lead at the 16:09 mark. Cruz accounted for the only Eagle scoring to this point with a layup. Immaculata then added to its lead with a 3-2 run over the next 2:47 including a one of two effort at the line for a 40-31 edge with 13:22 remaining. The Eagles were struggling as they turned the ball over eight times over the first 10:32 including a travel by junior Ryan Smith (2 points and a steal) at the 11:28 mark. IHS took advantage by increasing its lead to 44-31.

However, Isaac kept the Eagles within striking distance as he came up with a three point play at the 10:14 mark to close the gap to ten again at 44-34. Immaculata raised its lead to a dozen with a 6-4 run over the next 2:56 including two free throws at the 7:20 mark for a 50-38 lead. Cardy Mac would get another score to pull within ten again before the Spartans called for time with 5:34 remaining. Following the timeout, Rasar struck again from beyond the arc to pull his team to within single digits before Immaculata made one of two at the line for a 51-43 score with 4:30 to go. Neither team would score for the next 1:37 before the Spartans, which connected on 11 of 14 foul shots in the second half, made two from the line for a 53-43 lead at the 2:53 mark.

Then, Cardinal McCarrick rallied. The Eagles scored nine straight points in just 1:48 including a three pointer by Thomas off a drive and kickout by Rasar at the 2:30 mark, a steal and assist by Thomas on another three by Rasar at the 1:24 mark, and then a tranditional three point play by Isaac with 1:05 left for a 53-52 score. Unfortunately for Eagles fans, their team wouldn’t get any closer. Immaculata came right back down on its next possession to draw a foul, and sink two free throws for a 55-52 lead with 53 seconds remaining. Isaac again went to the line, but only made one of two for a 55-53 score with 43 seconds left. Following an Immaculata timeout, the Spartans closed out the contest with a 3-2 edge for the 58-55 victory.

With the win, Immaculata improved to 4-2 on the fall while Cardinal McCarrick dropped to 3-3. Both teams were back in action on Sunday night as Immaculata faced Hopewell Valley while the Eagles took on Franklin at IHS at 7:15 PM.
