GMC Hoops 2009 HBC Report
June 29, 2009 on 10:12 pm | In HBC | Comments OffSt. Patrick’s Wins Championship While St. Joseph’s Defeats East Orange And Loses To Westtown (PA)
NEPTUNE, NJ–On Monday evening, GMC Hoops learned courtesy of the Star-Ledger and HoopGroup that St. Patrick’s won the Hoop Group HBC Metro Classic down at the Hoop Group Headquarters facility formerly known as Rebounds. St. Patrick’s, which is the defending T of C Champion, was in the same bracket as St. Joseph’s of Metuchen. The Falcons opened up against East Orange Campus, and won their first round game before losing to Westtown of Pennsylvania, which then lost to St. Patrick’s in the Quarterfinals.
The Celtics, a national powerhouse out of Elizabeth, won the title without even having to play for the Championship. After defeating Westtown in the Elite Eight by a 68-55 margin, and then Seton Hall Prep by a 66-41 margin in the semifinals, St. Patrick’s was awarded the Championship because in the other semifinal between Paterson Catholic and Neuman Goretti of Philadelphia, there was a fight that occurred with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the game. As a result, Paterson Catholic, which lost twice to St. Pat’s including a defeat in the Non-Public B North Championship Game back in March, forfeited. St. Patrick’s itself was involved in a game that had a brawl when it defeated Newark Central in the earlier rounds, but didn’t cause the scuffle so the Celtics advanced.
St. Joseph’s was the only team from the Greater Middlesex Conference to take part in the team tournament that had 32 teams, which were guaranteed three games over the two day event. It was the first time in three years that GMC Hoops missed out on the event due to his work commitments.

MCC Summer League–June 25, 2009–South River Rolls Past South Amboy
June 29, 2009 on 8:11 am | In Middlesex County College Summer League, South River Hoops | Comments OffWalsh Leads Rams With Fine Shooting Effort In Win Over South Amboy, 41-25
EDISON, NJ–The Rams behind the hot shooting of guard Brandon Walsh rolled over South Amboy Thursday night, with an easy 41-25 win.
South River was back at full strength with the return of Stevie Moore (who still appeared to be bothered by a wrist injury sustained a week earlier), while getting Walsh, Xavier Foster, and Shawn Fenton for a full game.
This contest was never in doubt as the Rams led from the outset and never looked back. The Guvs, which were overmatched just struggled against the new look Rams. The Governors quickly fell behind 11-0 and never were able to recover or mount a serious challenge to South River the rest of the way.
South Amboy played a sloppy game - missing a lot of shots and committing countless turnovers, upsetting their coach who was very vocal from the sidelines, shouting his displeasure. The sloppiness seemed to be catchy as the Rams also had trouble shooting and controlling the basketball after opening up the early 11-0 lead. Not a good game all around by both teams.
The referees can also take some of the blame for ruining the tempo of the game. Questionable fouls called against both teams in the second half led to the game getting a bit out of hand in the closing minutes, as Rams’ Shawn Fenton was called for back to back technical fouls which resulted in his removal from the game.
The bright spot on offense for South River was Brandon Walsh who had an exceptional game, scoring 21 points on torrid shooting from the floor, while hitting all his free throws. Walsh has played very well in the summer league thus far - playing with confidence, while stepping up his game on offense.
The Rams improve to 3-1 with the win and take on Sayreville Tuesday night at 7PM.
| Team | 1 | 2 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| South River (3-1) | 19 | 22 | 41 |
| South Amboy (1-3) | 7 | 18 | 22 |
MCC Summer League–June 23, 2009–South River Falls To Keyport
June 29, 2009 on 8:08 am | In Middlesex County College Summer League, South River Hoops | Comments OffUndermanned Rams Squad Falls Short In Tremendous Comeback Bid, 52-43
EDISON, NJ–Graduation night (June 23rd) for South River High School meant happy times for graduating seniors, but turned out to be bad fortune for the Rams’ basketball team as Keyport held on and beat a frantic South River team 52-43 in Tuesday night action in the Middlesex County College Summer League.
The Rams missing Stevie Moore, Xavier Foster, Brandon Walsh, and Shawn Fenton (who were attending graduation ceremonies) found themselves down early 21-2, as Keyport took full advantage of the young and depleted South River “B-team”. Keyport scored at will and opened up a seemingly insurmountable lead in the early going.
However this Rams’ squad is different than those of the past few years, now firmly under the guidance of new head coach Rodney Harris. This team has guts, drive, and doesn’t give up.
The Rams mounted a furious comeback marked by the return of Foster, Walsh, and Fenton outscoring Keyport with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 21-13 — and went in at the half trailing by ten, 25-15.
The second half continued with more of the same, as the Rams clawed their way back to within four points of Keyport. South River was clicking on offense and defense and looked like they would come back and steal the game from the Red Raiders.
But with two minutes left in the contest, the Rams went cold from the floor, suffering several costly turnovers and missed shots, unable to get over that four point hump. The Raiders upped the final score to a nine point margin on free throws as South River fouled numerous times over the last minute of play.
A key positive for Rams’ fans is the fact that this “new” South River squad kept fighting throughout this game and didn’t give up — witness the total opposite with many blowouts that this team suffered over the past few seasons. Previously an early 21-2 deficit would have spelled death for the Rams but not for these players - these guys fight ’til the end. Kudos to Coach Harris and his assistant coaches.
| Team | 1 | 2 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyport (3-0) | 25 | 27 | 52 |
| South River (2-1) | 15 | 28 | 43 |
