St. Anthony’s Continues Dominance At T of C

Friars Win 11th T of C Championship With 61-49 Decision Over Plainfield

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ–On Monday night, the coronation was complete. St. Anthony’s returned to claim the Championship of the Tournament of Champions. It was a familiar place for the Friars. The Jersey City school completed their sixth perfect season with a 33-0 record and claimed their fourth national championship while under the direction of Hall of Fame coach, Bob Hurley. It wasn’t easy as Plainfield gave the Friars a tough time for much of the four periods of action, but they found a way to come up victorious.

Led by 17 points from both Myles Mack and Kyle Anderson, two transfers from the now defunct Paterson Catholic, St. Anthony’s won its 11th T of C title all time by the score of 61-49. The Friars got three pointers from both Jordan Quick and Myles Mack early in the fourth quarter to take a 47-36 lead, and the Cardinals were only able to get as close as six points on several occasions after that including 55-49 with 1:05 remaining after two free throws by Jahmal Lane. However, Jerome Frink scored twice and Mack scored on a breakaway layup in the waning moments to seal the 12 point win.

St. Anthony’s was making its 12 appearance in the T of C Championship, and won 11 T of C titles. The Friars are now 24-1 in its 12 appearances in the T of C with the only defeat coming at the hands of Elizabeth in the 1990 final. The Jersey City school has won 21 straight in the T of C since that 65-62 loss to Luther Wright and the Minutemen in the 1990 Championship. Combined, St. Anthony’s and St. Patrick’s of Elizabeth have made 18 appearances in the T of C final with 16 titles between them. The Friars defeated the Celtics for this year’s Non-Public B North Championship by the score of 62-45.
