GMC Hoops Award–Sixth Man of the Year

Stevens’ Ghosh Produced Big Plays and Big Numbers Off Bench

J.P. Stevens Rishav Ghosh puts up a free throw in the first half against East Brunswick Tech on February 27th. Ghosh came off the bench to average 6.2 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Hawks and earn the 2016 GMC Hoops Sixth Man of the Year Award.

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–After six years of struggle and mediocrity, the Hawks of J.P. Stevens returned back to the GMC Hoops Top Ten in 2015-16. Having the likes of top shooters and scorers such as Alex Corrigan and Mike Lionikis, football standout, Jay’von Blacknall running the point, and junior Javon Scott patrolling the paint. Shivam Patel completes the starting five with some scoring and other intangibles.

However, when the bright lights of GMC Hoops shined down on the Hawks during the course of the 2015-16 season, Rishav Ghosh came off the bench, and produced. In the five Stevens games covered by GMC Hoops this year, Ghosh scored in double figures, and averaged 11.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. His season high of 15 points occurred in one of these five games against Old Bridge in the 2016 GMCT Round of 16 on February 18th. As a result, Ghosh has been named the 2016 GMC Hoops Sixth Man of the Year.

In that game, Ghosh connected on six field goals and three foul shots. He made clutch shots and conventional three point plays to give the Hawks a fighting chance. Unfortunately, like in four of those five games, JPS came up just short as Old Bridge, led by another reserve, Zach Attianese, rallied in the fourth quarter to secure a 46-44 win, and a berth in the GMCT Elite Eight at New Brunswick High School. Ghosh had a similar performance in another close loss on February 2nd at the Bomb Shelter.

In those 24 games, Ghosh clicked on 53 field goals and 44 foul shots for a total of 150 points, or an average of 6.2 points per game. According to NJ.com, Ghosh also collected a total of 118 rebounds, or an average of 4.9 per contest. Ghosh scored in 22 of the 24 games he played in, and scored in double figures in 8 of those games.

In addition, Ghosh collected at least 5 rebounds in 14 games played this season, and at least 8 boards in five of the games he played in including two double digit rebounding games in the beginning of the season. On December 22nd, Ghosh collected a double-double of 10 points and a season high 13 rebounds to help lead the Hawks to its biggest win of the year over fourth ranked Woodbridge (40-29).
