Big Year For Piscataway Hoops In 2008-09

PISCATAWAY, NJ–Over the past several seasons, Piscataway Basketball has enjoyed a resurgence, but the program now has a solid foundation to build on for the next several years. First, the Boys Varsity team, which had been projected by some to be better than last year’s North Jersey Section 2 Group IV Champion, and state finalist, reclaimed the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Title with a 63-58 victory over St. Joseph’s in the Championship Game. On top of that, the Chiefs almost duplicated its state tourney feat from last year by reaching the finals of their section with victories on the road at Colonia (62-57) and Columbia (57-54) before losing to neighborhood rival, Plainfield (70-52). The team finished with a 24-6 record overall, and a 15-1 mark in the rough and tumble GMC Red.

Also reclaiming their rightful place on the GMCT throne was the Piscataway Girls team. After losing to Cardinal McCarrick in a thrilling rematch of the 2007 Girls Championship Game, the Lady Chiefs returned the favor this year by coming back to the RAC, and knocking off the Lady Eagles for the 2009 GMCT Girls Championship. Piscataway Boys JV had a fine season reaching the Final Four of the 2009 East Brunswick/GMC JV Tournament before losing to Cardinal McCarrick, which reached the JV Tourney Championship Game for the second straight year.

Adding to the already full Championship Trophy case at Piscataway High School, the Piscataway Boys Freshmen team had a stellar campaign that culminated with a thrilling victory over St. Joseph’s in the Championship Game of the 2009 Perth Amboy/GMC Freshmen Tournament. Overcoming a slow start, and withstanding a furious finish, the P-Way Frosh defeated the Little Falcons by a final score of 57-52. It was one thing to rebound from a 4-20 season several years ago to the GMCT Championship in 2007, but now Piscataway Basketball was a bright future with many more memorable seasons ahead.
