GMC Hoops Game Notes–County College of Morris @ Raritan Valley Community College–GSAC Clash–November 29, 2016

NORTH BRANCH, NJ–On Tuesday night, GMC Hoops took a trip out to Raritan Valley Community College after work to take in another Region 19 and Garden State Athletic Conference Clash between the Lions and the Titans from the County College of Morris.

In a game that showcased two former Greater Middlesex Conference standouts in Woodbridge’s Zaire Robinson and South Plainfield’s Lamont Williams, Raritan Valley broke away from a 63-62 lead with 9:34 remaining with an 18-4 outburst over a span of about six and a half minutes to take an 81-66 lead en route to a 92-78 victory.

Robinson collected 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists in the contest including 9 points during the pivotal second half Lions run. Teammate Kenyan Goodson led all scorers with 21 points along with 9 assists and 7 rebounds while Sam Pierre added 16 points and 8 boards. Ron Washington chipped in with a double-double of 15 points including two dunks and 16 rebounds along with 5 blocks for the Lions while Kevin Saylor added 13 points and 4 boards.

Tajree Adams led the Titans in defeat with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds along with 3 assists. Damonie Askew chipped in with 17 points while Williams, who led the GMC in scoring and three pointers as a senior a year ago, added 13 points including three treys along with 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Ranell Bell (11 points and 5 boards) and Quentin Pharis (10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists) rounded out much of the scoring for CCM.

The game was fairly close for the first 30 minutes or so of the contest. After Raritan Valley Community College jumped out to a 10-5 lead thanks to five points from Woodbridge’s Robinson, the County College of Morris stormed back to take a 20-16 lead as Williams sank his second three of the game from the left wing at the 13:21 mark. The two teams swapped leads 7 times and had a tie during a six minute stretch of the first half.

Neither team had a lead bigger than six points in the first half, and then the Titans of CCM rallied from a 57-50 deficit with 13:09 remaining with a 12-6 rally over a span of 4:35 to pull within one, but couldn’t retake the lead. Instead, RVCC finished the contest with a 29-16 surge including the pivotal 18-4 tear. Below are game notes from the action:

12:30 left in the first half and RVCC calls timeout after another score by CCM for a 20-16 lead.

9:41 left in the first half and RVCC ties CCM at 24-24 after an 8-4 run. Run capped by an onslaught of offensive rebounds that resulted in a putback by Jayce Beasley. There have been 7 lead changes and a tie in last 6 minutes.

6:04 left in 1st half and Woodbridge’s Zaire Robinson has 8 pts including a two handed dunk to pull RVCC to 30-29.

2:43 to go in the first half and the Titans of CCM remain in front of RVCC 35-34 thanks to a 5-2 run.

Second Half

17:21 left in regulation and RVCC and CCM are tied at 44-44 after 6-2 Lions run including a two handed dunk by Ron Washington.

16:00 left in the game and RVCC takes a 50-44 lead on a three pointer by Kenyan Goodson. Lions on a 12-4 spurt.

13:09 left and RVCC leads 57-50 after a layup and the foul for a three point play by Goodson.

9:34 remaining and CCM pulls within one at 63-62 on a three from the right wing.

7:42 left in the game and CCM calls time after a coast to coast layup by Zaire Robinson puts RVCC up 69-62.

5:11 left and RVCC leads 74-62 after a layup and the foul for a three point play by Zaire Robinson. RVCC on an 11-0 tear.

3:00–RVCC now leading 81-66. Lions on a 18-4 run including a dunk and layup by Ron Washington.

0:00–Game just ended with RVCC defeating CCM 92-78. Lions ended game on a 18-16 run including a dunk by Ron Washington and a jumper off the dribble by Robinson. Williams netted his third trey of the game to round out the scoring for CCM.
