GMC Hoops Game Notes–Perth Amboy Tech @ Timothy Christian–Gold Division Showdown–January 18, 2017

PISCATAWAY, NJ–On Wednesday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to the Timothy Christian School to take in the Gold Division Showdown between Perth Amboy Tech and Timothy Christian.

Perth Amboy Tech essentially wrapped up the GMC Gold Division crown by defeating Timothy Christian, 77-72. After the Tigers’ A.J. Myha converted a four point play to close the gap to 16-14 with 51 seconds to play in the first period, the Patriots surged with a 24-13 showing the rest of the opening half for a 40-27 halftime lead.

Timothy Christian then battled back in the third with a 19-7 rally that included a three point play by Louis Roche, a three pointer from Nate Aviles, a score by Rob Saydee, and a transition layup from Myha to pull within three at 49-46 heading into the fourth. The Tigers then got the opening score of the final frame to make it a one point game.

Amboy Tech wouldn’t let TCS tie or take the lead though. Instead, the Patriots scored 15 of the next 23 points including a jumper from just inside the top of the key by Javon Fisher at the 5:03 mark, and then a three from the right wing by Pedro Gonzalez at the 3:27 mark for a 64-56 lead. The Pats eventually led by 11 before the Tigers rallied again.

Led by Pierce Kokosinski, Saydee, and Roche, TCS got the deficit all the way down to four with 7.6 seconds to play, but Fisher made one of two from the line, and Miguel Hernandez got the offensive rebound on the missed free throw to wrap up the victory. Kyle Gregory led Amboy Tech with a game high 24 points while Gonzalez chipped in with 15 and Hernandez added 14.

Also contributing in the win were Fisher with 12 and Carlos Morla with 10. Kokosinski led TCS with 21 points while Saydee added 20, and Roche chipped in with 12. Myha also scored in double figures with 11. The victory gives Amboy Tech a three game lead in the Gold along with the head to head tiebreaker over TCS for sweeping the season series. 51 seconds left in first qtr and TCS pulls within 16-14 on this 4 pt play by A.J. Myha, who made a three pointer from the top of the key as he was fouled.

Second Quarter

4:28 left in 1st half and Amboy Tech leads 30-20 thanks to a short hook off a pivot and spin move by Carlos Morla. Ends 6-4 TCS run to open 2nd.

3:05 left in 3rd & TCS now on 12-4 run after a Nate Aviles trey from the right side closes gap to 44-39.

Fourth Quarter

7:10 remaining in 4th and TCS pulls within one at 49-48 after an earlier score from the right baseline

5:03 left in 4th and Amboy Tech now leads 56-52 after a jumper just inside the arc at the top of the key by Javon Fisher.

3:27 left in 4th and Amboy Tech now leads 64-56 on after a three from the right wing by Pedro Gonzalez after Miguel Hernandez showed some great hustle to save a ball from going out of bounds.

2:50 left and TCS calls time after a Pierce Kokosinski score breathes some life in Tigers. Amboy Tech up 64-58.

55.6 left and despite a turnaround jumper in the paint by Louis Roche, TCS trails 73-67

7.6 seconds left and TCS pulls within four at 76-72 on a Rob Saydee three from the right corner after the Tigers got an offensive rebound.
