GMC Hoops Highlights–January 24, 2017–East Brunswick @ Perth Amboy–Red Division Clash

Here are highlights from the action in the GMC Red Division clash between East Brunswick and Perth Amboy in late January 2017.

GMC Hoops dodged the remaining raindrops from the Nor’easter that passed through on Monday to get over to Perth Amboy High School for the GMC Red Division Clash between the 9th ranked Panthers and East Brunswick.

The three ball was hitting the net from all angles for both teams as they combined for 16 from beyond the arc with East Brunswick outscoring Amboy by a margin of 27-21 from long distance. Despite that, the Bears weren’t able to shake the Panthers until the final four minutes of the contest.

After a 5-0 run by Amboy that included a three by Joe Malave at the 4:22 mark to help close the gap to 48-46, EB went on a key 6-0 run that included a drive along the right baseline for a reverse by Joe Sampson for a 54-46 lead. Sampson later added two free throws with 1:15 left to wrap up the 58-50 Bears victory.

Sampson, who scored East Brunswick’s first 10 points of the game, finished with a game high 21 including four field goals, three treys, and a perfect 4 of 4 from the foul line. Senior Ezra Levitt chipped in with 13 points on three treys and 4 of 6 from the charity stripe.

Perth Amboy was led by senior Fres Cabrera, who had 11 points including a steal for a dunk with 1:05 left in the third period for a 44-41 EB lead. Joshua Cabezudo chipped in with 9 points all coming in the first half including a three just before the buzzer to end the second period for a 29-26 East Brunswick lead.

The win moved EB up to 6-8 overall on the season, and 5-5 in the GMC Red. The Bears victory also avenged an earlier season loss to Perth Amboy at the Bear’s Den on December 22nd (54-51). Amboy dropped its fourth straight, and fell to 5-10 overall on the season including a 3-7 mark in divisional play.
