Here are highlights from the last 5:09 of action in the Non-Public A South State Tournament Quarterfinals between Union Catholic and St. Joseph’s at Maglio Gymnasium in Metuchen.
Leading 43-39 with 5:09 remaining, top seeded St. Joseph’s got two baskets from Letrell West (15 points) and a layup from Mike Granda (8 points) as well as three FTs by Granda and two from West for a 13-8 spurt to take a 56-47 lead with under two minutes to play.
Union Catholic rallied back with five straight points including a jumper by Kyle Lofton (19 points) to pull within four at 56-52 with 25.9 seconds to go. St. Joseph’s would win though as Zach Martini (3 points) made one of two from the line with 0.6 seconds to play to close out the 57-52 victory.
The Falcons, led by freshman Tyree Taganeca-Ford with a game high 21 points, improved to 26-1 on the season, and will play Bishop Eustace in the Non-Public A South Semifinals on Saturday at 7:00 PM.
