GMC Hoops Summary–White Team Rolls Past Black Team in GMCBCA Girls All-Star Game, 94-62

White Team Wins for 2nd Straight Year; South Plainfield’s Cargill Named MVP

South Plainfield’s Sarah Cargill of the White Team puts up a three point shot attempt in the second half of the 2016 GMCBCA Senior Girls All-Star Game at Woodbridge High School on Tuesday. Cargill was selected as game MVP as the White Team won, 94-62.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ–Playing with plenty of firepower that included the duo of Monroe’s Ashlyn Petersen and Erin Seppi as well as Bishop Ahr’s Jenna Harsh, the White Team All-Stars were going to be tough to beat, but when you add the efforts of South Plainfield’s Sarah Cargill, they were unstoppable. Building up a 47-31 halftime lead, the White Team opened the second half on a 15-3 tear for a 62-34 advantage, and cruised from there to a 94-62 victory over the Black Team in the 2016 GMCBCA Senior Girls All-Star Game at Woodbridge High School.

The White Team had contributions from not only Petersen, Seppi, Harsh, and Cargill, but also from the likes of Middlesex’s Zakiya Beckles, Sayreville’s Nura Sbeah, and J.F. Kennedy’s Jackie Soper. Leading by 16 at the intermission, the White Team scored the first 9 points of the second half for a 56-31 advantage before the Black Team got on the board with a three from the right wing that banked at the 16:38 mark. Colonia’s Hannah Doyle sparked the run with a score before Sbeah connected on a shot in the paint, Soper got a kind bounce on a jumper, and Sbeah knocked down a triple from the left wing to highlight the rest of the run.

Following the three by the Black Team, the White team scored the next six points including a steal for a layup by New Brunswick’s Jayda Anderson, a jumper from the left corner by Middlesex’s Rosie Guarino, and then another jumper from the right side for a 62-34 lead. The Black Team scored the next four points including a coast to coast layup to narrow the deficit to 62-38 at the 12:59 mark before Petersen took a pass from Spotswood’s Grace Mehr at the top of the key, and knocked down the three pointer for a 65-38 White Team lead. Edison’s Ashley Hunt then stole a pass in the Black Team’s back court, and went the rest of the way for a layup and a 65-40 White Team lead.

Cargill then netted a trey from the left wing for a 68-40 lead before the Black Team scored 6 of the next 8 points including a layup by East Brunswick’s Ali Warren to close the gap to 70-46 with 8:09 to go in the game. Beckles then put the Black Team’s run to rest by knocking down a three from the left side of the key for a 73-46 White Team advantage. On the next Black Team possession, Metuchen’s Kelly Beck got her hands on a steal off a mishandled ball, and passed ahead to Sbeah for a layup and a 75-46 White Team lead. Each team scored five points each before Beck scored on a layup off a pass from Seppi, and Cargill followed that up with a three from well beyond the arc for a 85-51 advantage.

The Black Team scored 11 of the next 18 points before the White Team closed out the scoring on a outback by Doyle with about 15 seconds to play. The White Team, which won last year’s contest, 61-44 behind game MVP, Camille Menns of Wardlaw, won the event for the second year in a row.
