St. Thomas Aquinas to Compete in 2020 Metro Classic

Aquinas Reclaims Top Spot in Latest Top Ten

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ—The week of reckoning is upon us here in Middlesex County as later this week the Greater Middlesex Conference Boys and Girls Basketball Committees will convene at Spotswood High School on Thursday morning.

It will be an interesting seeding meeting to say the least as there will be some issues that have occurred over the past couple weeks that have made this seeding one that GMC Hoops has not really experienced. This past week’s results also will play a key role as well.

One of those results was South Brunswick’s dominant win over St. Joseph’s at SBHS in Monmouth Junction on Saturday. Meanwhile, St. Thomas Aquinas continued to win despite having to go to overtime for an 85-78 win on the road at South Plainfield minus Quadry Adams.

As a result, Aquinas, which also defeated Group 2 and Shore Conference powerhouse, Rumson Fair-Haven on Saturday at the Metro Classic’s second session in Toms River (74-47), moves back up to the top spot for the first time since the early days of 2020. St. Joseph’s slips down to number two. Carteret, which defeated a very good North Brunswick team on the road with its top player sitting out with an injury, and another top player battling first half foul problems, stays at number 3.

South Brunswick does climb up a couple notches to fourth while Edison, which according to GMC rules as won the White Division outright despite still possibly ending up in a statistical tie with New Brunswick, stays at fifth. Whatever the outcome, the Eagles won a division title for the first time in school history, and is making a run for a school record in wins for a season.

New Brunswick slips down to 6th while Colonia moves up to 7th ahead of Dunellen at 8. North Brunswick jumps back into the poll at No. 9 while Perth Amboy slips down to 10th. East Brunswick falls to 11th after a loss to Old Bridge while Monroe remains at 12th. South Plainfield stays at 13th after a solid win at home over Metuchen, and two hard fought losses to top five teams in Edison (42-41) and Aquinas (85-78 OT).

Below is our latest Top Ten as well as other teams up for consideration. NOTE: These are not seeds for the upcoming GMCT Boys Tournament. My mock seeding will be forthcoming.
