Goldstein Takes Over the Reins at Middlesex HS

Tapped to Replace Art Tooles as New Blue Jays Varsity Coach

MIDDLESEX, NJ–The coaching carousel in the Greater Middlesex Conference continues to turn as far as boys basketball goes. Recently GMC Hoops learned that Jared Goldstein had been hired late last month to take over the varsity boys basketball program at Middlesex Borough High School. He replaces Art Tooles, who took the head coaching position at New Brunswick HS. Previously Goldstein served as a junior varsity and assistant boys basketball coach at the school.

Goldstein has served at various levels of the boys basketball program in Middlesex over the past seven years, and he has also worked with players during the summer as director of the Break Away basketball camp. In addition, he has earned his stripes further by working basketball camps around Central Jersey including Basking Ridge, Dunellen, and New Providence, and the Bob Hurley Pocono Invitational Camp in Pennsylvania.

This past season, Middlesex’s JV played in the 2014 East Brunswick/GMC JV Tournament, and despite being seeded 21st in the field, the Junior Jays gave 12th seeded Old Bridge all it could handle in the preliminary round before losing in overtime. In 2012-13, Middlesex’s JV squad also competed in the EB/GMC JV tourney as the 15th seed, but lost to 18th seeded Woodbridge in the preliminary round. Goldstein’s work at both the JV and freshman levels have helped build the foundation for this past season’s success and a competitive team in the GMC Blue for next season and perhaps beyond.

Goldstein began his coaching tenure at Middlesex when Brian Feath began coaching varsity at the school and was on the staff when the Jays reached the Central Jersey Group II finals in 2009. Since then, he gradually rose through the ranks. He remained on the staff when Tooles took over several years ago. This past season, Middlesex improved with a 14-13 overall record including a 7-9 in the GMC Blue and an 11-10 mark in conference. Earlier this summer, the Jays played at the Bloomfield HS team camp and is slated to play at the Kean Ironman Challenge later this month.
