South River’s 2nd Half Rally Falls Short; Spotswood Rolls
MONROE, NJ–On Sunday night, GMC Hoops took in the final night of action at the Monroe Sports Center Summer League with two consolation games involving teams from the Greater Middlesex Conference. South River took on West Windsor-Plainsboro North in the 3rd Place Game while Spotswood battled Robbinsville in another consolation.
In the third place game between South River and West Windsor-Plainsboro North, the Rams fell behind 28-15 with just over four minutes to go in the first half before rallying with a 12-4 run that included two threes from Silvio Cruz and a trey by Derrick Whitaker to close the gap to 32-27 at the half.
West Windsor-Plainsboro North then opened the second half with a 14-6 tear that included a three point play at the 11:46 mark for a 46-33 lead, but South River would rally again. Led by a scoring barrage by Whitaker along with scores from incoming freshman Jayvon Taylor and another three from Silvio Cruz, the Rams put together a 30-20 surge that narrowed the deficit to 66-63 with 13 seconds left, but the Knights were able to hang on for a 68-63 win.
In the other consolation game, Abdul Nieskens hit three treys in the first half while J.T. Vento added three scores including a dunk to give Spotswood a 15-0 start, and an eventual 21-4 lead against Robbinsville. The Ravens went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 11, but Andrew Fuzesi netted a three from the right wing late in the first half for a 24-10 halftime advantage.
Robbinsville would score the first six points of the second half to close within single digits, but couldn’t get any closer as Vinnie Guardiola scored 8 points the rest of the way including a three pointer and a conventional three point play to help put the Chargers ahead by 21 en route to a 46-29 win. Matt Vento also contributed with a three point play late in the first half, and a floater in the second half while Derek Buhl showed some hustle, and helped set up some scores.
