South Brunswick Defeats Trenton to Advance

EWING, NJ–On Wednesday evening, GMC Hoops traveled down to Moody Park to take in opening round action in the playoffs there. South Brunswick, the seventh seed in this year’s playoffs took on 10th seeded Trenton in one of the two 7:00 PM games.

Despite an injury to one of the Vikings top players, Mike Ugarte, the Vikings managed to jump out to a 37-21 lead with eight minutes remaining, and then got a three pointer from Ryan Moran. South Brunswick then added one of two from the line before Trenton got on the board with a basket to close the gap to 41-23. Tavian Alford then made one of two from the charity stripe with under two minutes to play before Trenton scored on a putback to round out the scoring.

In other action, fourth seeded Bordentown, coming off a Central Jersey Group 2 Championship this past winter, rolled past 13th seeded Burlington Township by 45 during the 7:00 PM hour. Before that, eighth seeded Pennington won the only 6:00 PM game by downing 9th seeded Hightstown. Then, during the nightcap round of games at 8:00 PM, Council Rock North defeated Princeton by ten while Nottingham overcame a sluggish start to defeat Florence by eight.

South Brunswick advances to the quarterfinals to face second seeded Lawrence in a rematch of Monday night’s game at Ewing High School won by the Cardinals, 57-43. The two teams were also the Montgomery Team Camp, but didn’t play each other. Lawrence defeated Middlesex (60-45) and Spotswood (61-47) at Montgomery in June.
