NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—On Saturday, the sixth player from the Greater Middlesex Conference scored his 1,000th point. New Brunswick’s dynamic junior guard, Ahyan Brown-Miller, reached the historic milestone by making three free throws in a game against neighborhood rival North Brunswick during a 73-48 victory in the Hub City on Saturday afternoon.

For the game, Brown collected a game high 24 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. He connected on four three pointers for the Zebras, which are currently in the midst of a boys basketball renaissance under third year head coach, Samir Sanu. Junior big man, Tahjay Moore also chipped in with a monster double-double of 18 points and 20 rebounds along with 4 blocks.

So far in his career to date, Brown, the nephew of Shaheid Williams, a 1,000 point scorer at North Brunswick (1,009 points) before graduating in 2003, has played in 60 games, made 285 field goals and 57 three pointers along with 249 free throws for a current total of over 1,000 points to become the first NBHS player to reach the milestone since Dwayne Jarrett, a football and hoops standout, who graduated in 2004, who went on to play football at USC and the Carolina Panthers of the NFL.

Brown became the ninth player in New Brunswick High School’s history to score at least 1,000 points in his career. Below is the list of all NBHS 1,000 point scorers who have reached the milestone:

With yesterday’s GMC White Division win over North Brunswick, the Zebras improved to 11-5 overall on the 2018-19 season, which is the best start they have had since the 2011-12 campaign, which ended with a 15-10 record and berths in the 2012 GMCT Quarterfinals and 2012 Central Jersey Group 3 Quarterfinals. Both appearances ended with heartbreaking losses to North Brunswick (48-44) and Lakewood (70-65 in OT) respectively.

Although Colonia has dominated the GMC White this season under the guidance of first year head coach, Jose Rodriguez, and led by seniors Chad Baker, Luke Valeriano, and Chris Sica, New Brunswick has been one of just several teams that have played well to this point in the season. The Zebras are currently 6-3 in the White Division with losses to Colonia (51-25), J.F. Kennedy (71-68), and Edison (40-39). NBHS also defeated Kennedy (72-60) and Edison (59-53).

In addition to its GMC White schedule, New Brunswick has also played the likes of crossover foes such as East Brunswick (lost 66-52) and South Brunswick (won 54-51), and non-conference opponents as Elizabeth (lost 57-40), Plainfield (won 51-44), Somerville (won 57-42), West Windsor-Plainsboro North (76-58), and Franklin (68-58). The win over Franklin was the first time that the Zebras defeated the Warriors since they began playing each other again back in the 2014-15 season.

Five seasons ago, New Brunswick didn’t even win a game with an 0-21 mark. The following season, NBHS finished 1-18. Sanu is the sixth different coach at New Brunswick HS since the legendary Odie Page stepped down following the 2003-04 season, which concluded with the Zebras winning the Central Jersey Group 2 Championship over Rahway (61-42), and then falling to Brian Zoubek led Haddonfield (62-53) in the Group 2 state semifinals at Perth Amboy.

Ahyan Brown-Miller doesn’t just limit his success to the hardwood of the basketball court. The junior hoops standout at NBHS also excels on the football field, where he helped the Zebras football team finish at 3-6 including a wild 38-34 win over East Brunswick in a Central Jersey Group 4 regional crossover contest at Jay Doyle Field in East Brunswick on November 1st. In the game, Miller had two TD catches in the contest, and ended up selected All GMC Offense Second Team by the Home News-Tribune.

In addition, Brown-Miller, who was selected team captain as a sophomore a year ago, has also excelled in the classroom. He has a 3.5 GPA according to Sanu, and has been a good example to his peers and the community. Ahyan Brown-Miller has been a solid example of what a student athlete should be. Congratulations Ahyan on your accomplishment and best of luck the rest of this season.
