SOUTH AMBOY, NJ—On Thursday night, South Amboy’s Kyle Gasiewski made history. In a 69-46 win by the Guvs over Roselle Park, Gasiewski, connected on 7 field goals and a three pointer along with clicking on 11 attempts from the foul line to not only score a game high 28 points, but also become the 14th player in school history to score his 1,000th point.

Gasiewski, who is also a baseball standout at South Amboy, has scored in double figures in all 9 games played by the Guvs, and has scored at least 21 points per game in 8 of those 9 games including a season high of 28 in this win and a 69-62 victory over Wardlaw back on December 19th in South Amboy. The South Amboy senior, who only had 15 of his career points as a freshman, has 208 points so far this season and 1,022 for his career after adding another 22 in a 74-57 win over Manville on Saturday.

In tallying those 208 points this season, which averages out to about 23.1 points per game, Gasiewski has collected 41 field goals, 18 three pointers, and 48 free throws according to NJ.com. The most threes, Gasiewski has had in one game this year was five in the win over Wardlaw. Gasiewski’s play along with the increased contributions from Josh Jimenez has South Amboy playing its best basketball in several years.

After finishing 2-20 a year ago, the Guvs under first year head coach, Matt Wiater, have already eclipsed last year’s win total with a 5-4 overall mark this season including three straight victories to begin 2019. Following an 0-2 start, South Amboy has won 5 of its last 7 games. The Guvs have been able to achieve that despite junior Louie Martinez scoring only 16 points since pouring in 18 against Piscataway Tech in the season opener at the Friends of South Amboy Benefit Showcase on December 15th.

During his career, Gasiewski, scored 15 points as a freshman, 425 as a sophomore, 374 last year as a junior, and 208 so far this year. Over his four year varsity career, Gasiewski has played in 59 games for South Amboy, collected 186 field goals, 118 threes including a GMC leading 65 two years ago, and 212 free throws. For his career, Gasiewski is averaging 17.3 points per game. He has scored in double figures in 49 of his 59 career games.

Despite the team’s struggles a year ago, Gasiewski still landed a career high 32 points in a 65-62 opening night loss to Perth Amboy Tech on December 15, 2017, and then scored 30 in a 64-60 loss at Highland Park on January 10, 2018. Congratulations Kyle on this special milestone, and best of luck the rest of this season.
