South River’s Fenton Steps in to Help Daniel Webster College

Former Rams Standout Still Shines Despite Late Start to Season

NASHUA, NH–The long and winding road that has been former South River boys basketball standout, Shawn Fenton’s collegiate career has made a stop at Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire. After starting the season in January, Fenton gradually put together a solid sophomore season for the Eagles that was capped by two clutch free throws that sealed a quarterfinal round upset of Elms in the 2015 New England Collegiate Conference Tournament on Feburary 24th.

Fenton ended up playing and starting in all 21 games that he was eligible for the Eagles this past season. The South River native, who has had stops along the way at Middlesex County College and New Jersey City University, averaged 30.5 minutes, 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. Fenton made 85 of 206 shots from the floor including four three pointers while netting 45 of 67 from the foul line for a total of 219 points. Fenton ranked 7th on the team in scoring, 4th in rebounding, tied for 6th in assists, 3rd in blocks, and 4th in free throw shooting percentage.

The 6’5″ Fenton, who just completed his sophomore season, put up double digit scoring in 13 of the 21 games he played in this year. He also had one double digit rebounding game. His season high was 19 points in a home conference game against Mitchell on January 13th that Daniel Webster lost 80-72. In that game, Fenton played 30 minutes, made 8 of 14 from the field including one of two from beyond the arc, and sank 2 of 5 from the foul line. He also grabbed 6 rebounds and collected an assist. Later in the season, Fenton scored 17 points in a game at Mitchell that Daniel Webster also lost. His best overall performance of the season though came in another conference game at Lesley on January 20th.

In the 57-52 victory over Lesley, Fenton played 37 minutes and collected his only double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Fenton connected on 6 of 12 from the field and 6 of 11 at the foul line. The high point of Fenton’s season came in the playoffs when his sixth seeded Daniel Webster College Eagles traveled to third seeded Elms for the quarterfinal round game of the NECC tourney. Fenton came up big with 16 points and 8 rebounds in 38 minutes played including two free throws with three seconds remaining in overtime to propel the Eagles to its first post-season victory since 2009, and only the second since 1998. DWC, which has never advanced to the NECC title game, ended up losing to second seeded Regis in the NECC semifinals.

On the season, Daniel Webster College finished 11-16 overall including a 7-9 mark in conference play for a 6th place finish in the NECC. DWC plays the likes of Southern Vermont, the conference’s best team this season with a 25-4 record including a 16-0 regular season conference mark, Regis, Becker, Elms, Mitchell, Wheelock, Newbury, and Lesley.
