Summer Primetime Shootout–Some Results–August 13, 2016

South Brunswick Battles in Close Losses to Trenton Catholic and Trenton Central

HAMILTON, NJ–Early Saturday morning, GMC Hoops traveled down Route 1 and Interstate 295 South to Trenton Catholic Academy to take in the first three games of the day at the 2016 Summer Primetime Shootout. South Brunswick was in action in two of those games.

All three games were close battles that were decided by four points each. One of the contests, Roselle Catholic versus The Hun School, went to overtime. South Brunswick trailed by double digits late in both of its games against Trenton Catholic and Trenton Central, but battled back to make things interesting in the end.

Led by the likes of soon to be seniors Mike Ugarte and Tavian Alford, South Brunswick rallied from a 54-44 deficit with exactly four minutes to play with a 9-0 run over a span of 3:18 to pull within one with 42.4 seconds left, but the Iron Mikes netted three of four from the foul line to sow up the 57-53 win.

Against Trenton Central, the Vikings trailed 47-34 with 6:43 remaining, but rallied with a 14-2 tear capped by two free throws from Alford with 33 seconds to go for a 49-48 Tornadoes lead. Trenton was able to make three of four from the line over the last 29 seconds to wrap up the 52-48 win. South Brunswick, which went 0-2 on the day, will play two more games on Sunday starting at 4:00 PM.

In between South Brunswick’s two games on Saturday morning was an epic battle between Roselle Catholic and the Hun School. The game featured six dunks including five by the Lions of RC, but Hun had the dunk of the day with a putback dunk midway through the first half. Roselle Catholic appeared prime to run the Raiders of Hun out of the gym early on, but Hun battled to get back into the contest.

Fueled by a passionate crowd of supporters, the Hun school took the lead back, and led by as many as seven after an 8-0 early second half run made the score, 34-27. Roselle Catholic responded though with a 17-9 spurt that included a score from former St. Joseph’s standout Khalif Battle, and a reverse one handed dunk by Nas Reid for a 44-43 lead.

The game continued to go back and forth and went into overtime, where the Lions of RCHS scored off the opening tip, and hit a jumper with 46.3 seconds before making two free throws with 2.9 seconds to go for a 57-53 win. Once again, below are the scores from the three games covered by GMC Hoops at the Summer Primetime Shootout on Saturday:
