Thoughts On DelGuercio’s Departure From E.B. Tech

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ–This week, GMC Hoops learned that Jerry DelGuercio, the head coach for the East Brunswick Tech Tigers over the past two seasons, stepped down to take an assistant baseball coaches position at Raritan Valley Community College.

Prior to leaving, DelGuercio helped turnaround a program that has struggled since reaching the Central Jersey Group I Championship Game back in 2000. In 2007-08, the team won seven straight games to end the season a game under .500 at 11-12. Last season, East Brunswick Tech built off of that momentum with a 16-7 season, the best in almost a decade, a second place finish in the GMC Gold, a win in the play-in round of the 2009 GMCT and its first berth in the state tournament since the 2003 season.

The Tigers have struggled to keep its program together in the past. Constant changeover in personnel and coaching have prevented any real stability and continuity, which has resulted in past teams not doing well. DelGuercio helped changed that in his short time. East Brunswick Tech competed at Middlesex County College this past summer, was putting together an offseason weight training and conditioning program, and the team was looking to take a step up this season with the likes of Robert Brown, Corey Ragland, Homer James, Anthony Morrison, and Mark DeMaio all returning.

It will be interesting to see how the new coach at East Brunswick Tech will take it from here with the foundation of success that DelGuercio built. Hopefully, the best days of E.B. Tech basketball are ahead of them, but one thing is for sure, Jerry DelGuercio did his best to make this program a winner again.
