With the end of play at the 2010 Summer Prime Time Shootout on Sunday night, GMC Hoops completed another busy summer of hoops coverage. The site covered 18 different events including 11 summer leagues and 7 team camps. See details. It also got information on several other events this summer. More to come though as the summer season wrap-up has just begun.

Raritan Bay Finishes Another Big Summer With Tripleheader
While Summer Prime Time Shootout Kicks Off On Friday

Note: If you don't see anything new here, check out the blog.

On Friday afternoon, GMC Hoops will be taking the long trip down to Allentown High School for the Summer Prime Time Shootout. Action is set to begin there in the next hour, and will last for three days ending on Sunday night. The finale will include the two GMC teams in the event: St. Joseph's and Piscataway as the two teams will be playing at 9:00 PM on Sunday night. Meanwhile, the Raritan Bay Summer League concluded with a tripleheader of games at the always air-conditioned South Amboy Middle/High School. Two of the games were from the high school division as South Amboy played two contests against the Old Bridge Knightmares and Union Catholic. The third game was a crossover as We Run of Roselle from the 5th and 6th Grade Division took on the Old Bridge Warriors from the 7th and 8th Grade Division. All three contests were decided by single digits.

In the first game, Daquan Davis scored 18 points while teammate Aaron Radich added 13 to spur the South Amboy Ballers past the Old Bridge Knightmares by a score of 37-31. Davis scored 10 points in the second half while Radich chipped in with eight points as South Amboy overcame a one point halftime deficit with a 23-16 showing in the final 20 minutes for the victory. In the next game, the Ballers did double duty as they took on Union Catholic. This time, the Vikings won the game by a 37-31 score. The Union County school had 12 points off ten South Amboy turnovers, and nine points off of ten offensive rebounds. Union Catholic went only 14 of 41 from the floor for 34 percent, and made 6 of 12 from the line, but outscored South Amboy by a 9-3 margin in three pointers, and limited the Ballers to 10 of 47 shooting for 21 percent.

Radich led the way in a losing cause for South Amboy with 10 points along with 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks while Davis chipped in with 8 points and 11 boards. Cardinal McCarrick's Aaron Lewis added 7 points in the loss. In the finale, it was another close one as We Run jumped out to a 15-9 halftime lead as they forced 14 turnovers, which they converted into seven points. In the second half, the Old Bridge Warriors made a game of it with a 21-18 showing, but came up short as We Run used up much of the clock down the stretch to pull out the 33-30 victory. We Run ended up shooting 14 of 38 from the floor including 4 of 16 from the line while Old Bridge was limited to 13 of 35 shooting including 0 of 8 from three. Dominic Pedone led the Warriors in a losing cause with 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor along with 4 of 8 from the line while grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double. Ed Mish chipped in for Old Bridge with a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.

Final Weekend Of Summer League Season To Be A Good Finish

Note: If you don't see anything new here, check out the blog.

On Thursday night, GMC Hoops will head down to South Amboy Middle/High School for the 40th night of action from the 2010 Raritan Bay Summer League. Then, on Friday, the site will make the long trip down to Allentown High School to take in the full first day of action from the 2010 Summer Prime Time Shootout. The site will then wrap up its summer travels with trips to Allentown on Saturday and Sunday night for more action from the SPTS. Earlier in the week, the site was at the Colonia JV Summer League, where St. Joseph's defeated Hillside for the Championship. Last night, it was over in Hillsborough to see the two semfinal games from the playoffs in the Hillsborough JV Summer League.

Piscataway Upends McCarrick To Play Rahway In Final
While St. Joseph's Falls To St. Patrick's In Championship

Note: If you don't see anything new here, check out the blog.

On Friday, GMC Hoops will be completing a very hectic week by going out to see the Championship Game of the Rahway Summer League, and also some action from the final Rutgers Team Camp of the summer. The site has seen 25 games in just the past two weeks along with more coming today.

On Wednesday, the site traveled over to Linden High School to take in the semifinals of the 2010 Linden Summer League. Both Final Four contests involved teams from the GMC as St. Joseph's took on LHS in one game while East Brunswick battled St. Patrick's in the other. Both teams made good representations of themselves and the conference against these two Union County powers. The Falcons got off to a slow start as Linden jumped out to an 18-7 lead, but outscored the Tigers 54-40 over the final three quarters to register the upset win, 61-58. Jimbo Long led St. Joe's with 17 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the floor including 2 of 4 from three, and 7 of 8 from the foul line. Quenton DeCosey chipped in with 13 points including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. EBHS wasn't as fortunate though as St. Pat's used a 13-5 showing in the second quarter, and a 14-6 effort in the fourth to come away with the 53-42 win. See details. Afterward, the site traveled over to South Amboy Middle/High School to catch the nightcap game between We Run and Franklin Park in the Raritan Bay Summer League. See the story on that game.

Yesterday, the site traveled to three different locations for playoff action. First, GMC Hoops went back up to Linden to see St. Joseph's play St. Patrick's in the final of the Linden Summer League. The Falcons were unable to repeat the fine effort on Wednesday as St. Pat's put together an 18-7 third quarter to break away from a 24-21 halftime lead to win, 54-38. Quenton DeCosey led St. Joe's in a losing cause with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. After that, the site headed back down St. George's Avenue, and stopped over at Rahway High School for the two semifinal games in the Rahway Summer League. The first game was an encore performance between top seeded Cardinal McCarrick and fourth seeded Piscataway. McCarrick made five of its first six shots, and jumped out to a 21-7 lead before P-Way rallied with a 43-24 surge over a span of about 28 minutes to take a 50-45 lead with 1:20 left. The Eagles rallied to tie the contest at 50-50 with 58.6 seconds left on a three pointer by Charlie Gorman and a layin by Dana Raysor.

Piscataway pulled out the win though as the Chiefs came right back down the floor, and got a layup from Tajae Sharpe for a 52-50 lead with 48.8 seconds left, picked up two free throws from Vik Singh with 24.6 seconds left, and hung on for the 55-52 victory. Sharpe and Greg Davis led P-Way with 13 points each while Devonte Smith added 8 points and 9 rebounds, and Singh collected 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Marques Townes led all scorers with a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards in a losing cause for McCarrick. Earlier in the evening, second seeded Rahway defeated sixth seeded Woodbridge by a score of 39-22. Finally, the site got back on Inman Ave, and drove over to Colonia High School to see the final playoff game of the evening there as fifth seeded Colonia II advanced by defeating McCarrick II.

2010 Summer League Playoffs Underway In Earnest As
McCarrick, P-Way, And Woodbridge Advance To Semis At Rahway

Note: If you don't see anything new here, check out the blog.

On Monday and Tuesday, GMC Hoops got going with its playoff coverage as it saw opening round action at both the Bound Brook and Rahway Summer Leagues, and then second round action at Rahway. Three teams from the Greater Middlesex Conference including: top seeded Cardinal McCarrick, fourth seeded Piscataway, and sixth seeded Woodbridge reached the semifinal around at Rahway while Middlesex, the only team in the Bound Brook Summer League, was defeated in the first round by Somerville (53-40).

J.F. Kennedy, the tenth seed in the Rahway Summer League playoffs, and upset winner over seventh seeded South Plainfield on Monday night (35-28), took second seeded Rahway down to the wire before losing 41-39. Rahway jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first eleven minutes of the contest as things appeared to be headed in the same direction they went when these two teams met on Friday night in the finale of the regular season. However, Chris Banos got the most out of his players including Daishon Robinson and Josh Kamenas.

Robinson, who went 3 of 4 from the floor and 2 of 3 from the foul line for 8 points along with 4 rebounds in the victory over SPHS on Monday night, took his game to a higher level against Rahway on Tuesday while Kamenas played with more confidence and swagger against the Union County foe. The result was 25-14 surge over the next 15:38 to go ahead by a score of 28-27 with 13:22 remaining. From there on out, it was a dog fight as the two teams scrapped for three lead changes and two ties the rest of the way while neither squad had a lead bigger than five points.

However, the Indians went up by four at 41-37 with 1:16 to play before Nick Spoganetz netted two from the foul line with 28.7 seconds to play. The Mustangs then got a steal from Kamenas, and called for time with 21.1 seconds left. JFK set up for a last second shot, but Rahway managed to force a turnover as time ran out with the Indians advancing to face Woodbridge in the semifinals by the score of 41-39. In the other quarterfinal round game, Cardinal McCarrick jumped out to a 30-12 halftime lead, and lead by a 36-13 score with 15:07 left before St. Joe's made things more respectable by closing the contest with a 23-12 run for a 48-36 Eagles win. Both Charlie Gorman and Marques Townes shot much better as the two combined for 8 of 12 shooting in the first half, and 20 of the team's 30 first half points.

Gorman ended up going 5 of 7 from the floor including 2 of 4 from three for 16 points, 2 rebounds, 2 charges, and a steal while Townes finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Salman Hasan stood out for St. Joseph's with 10 points, 2 rebounds, an assist, and a steal in the loss.

Quite A Finale To The Regular Season At Rahway Summer League

Note: If you don't see anything new here, check out the blog.

It is often said that the best things are saved for last. Tonight's finale to the regular season at the inaugural Rahway Summer League proved to be a testament to that as there was an upset, a double overtime thriller, and a last second victory in the four games on Friday night. First, A.L. Johnson, which earned the 11th seed in the upcoming playoff round, defeated South Plainfield by the score of 42-35. The Tigers trailed 32-19 with 11:07 remaining before rallying with a 9-0 run to close within four at 32-28 at the 5:48 mark. The Crusaders then scored the next five points for a 37-28 lead with 1:28 remaining before SPHS went on a 5-1 run capped by a three pointer from the right wing by Ray Perez with 30 seconds to go to pull within five at 38-33. However, the Tigers couldn't get any closer as A.L. Johnson of Clark scored the upset of the night.

Next was an absolute thriller. It was non-stop basketball as both Cardinal McCarrick and Perth Amboy put in on the line in quite a contest between two teams entering the day at 8-1. The Eagles really had their share of struggles from the floor in this one as they went 19 of 67 overall from the floor for 28 percent including 5 of 28 from three point range, but found a way to win. Cardy Mac trailed 21-11 with two minutes to go in the first half before embarking on a 17-7 spurt over the next 13:35 to tie the game at 28-28 with 9:25 to play. From there, there would be three lead changes and four ties over the final 14:25 including a three minute first overtime, and a two minute second overtime before McCarrick emerged victorious with a 49-47 win.

Marques Townes forced the first overtime by netting a game tying three pointer from the right wing as time expired in regulation. Townes ended up with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds along with 2 steals, an assist, and a block despite shooting 5 of 21 from the floor. Charlie Gorman scored eight of his 15 points in the two overtime periods, and also grabbed five rebounds while handing out two assists, and swiping a steal. Gorman struggled as well from the floor going just 5 of 25 from the field including 3 of 21 from beyond the arc. Kearny Canela led Amboy in a losing cause with 16 points despite some shooting woes himself with a 4 of 18 effort from the floor. He did make 7 of 10 from the line while also pulling down 8 boards. John Appiah only had 5 points for McCarrick, but grabbed 10 rebounds.

The third game of this Friday night quadrupleheader was the least competitive of the four, but still had its moments. J.F. Kennedy committed 24 turnovers and Rahway scored 16 points off those miscues while getting 15 second chance points off of 19 offensive boards in a 53-38 victory. The Indians were 7 of 16 from three point range as well while the Mustangs were only 3 of 14 from long distance. Nick Spoganetz led the way for JFK in a losing effort with 10 points including three treys while pulling down five rebounds, and collecting two assists, a steal, and a block. Josh Kamenas added 6 points on 3 of 4 shooting while pulling down 9 rebounds, blocking two shots, and swiping a steal. Daishon Robinson made 3 of 6 shots from the floor along with a free throw for 7 points while also picking up 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block.

The fourth and final game of the evening pitted two parochial schools as St. Joseph's took on Union Catholic. The two teams went at it throughout in a contest that came down to the final seconds. There were ten lead changes and two ties in this affair while neither team had a lead bigger than six points throughout. The Falcons, which were playing mostly underclassmen including some incoming freshmen, played a game typical of their effort here at Rahway: very competitive. St. Joe's had a 12-9 edge in points off of threes, but turned the ball over 14 times, which Union Catholic converted into eight points. The Vikings, which were somewhat shorthanded themselves, also grabbed ten offensive rebounds for eight second chance points. The Falcons had the edge in rebounding overall (31-26) including a 14-10 edge in the offensive glass, but only had five second chance points.

After taking a 40-38 lead on a three pointer with 3:42 to go, St. Joseph's couldn't put the game away as the Falcons missed two free throws at the 2:38 mark, committed a turnover at the 1:11 mark, and Union Catholic then tied the game with a steal off an inbounds for a layup to tie the score at 40-40 with 50 seconds to go. St. Joe's missed two more foul shots with 45.5 seconds to go, but swiped a steal with 35 seconds to play, and called timeout with 17.8 seconds left. However, the Vikings got a steal with 12.5 seconds left, and drew a foul on a drive with 5.6 seconds to go, which resulted in one of two from the line for the 41-40 win as the Falcons were unable to get a shot off as time expired. More details will be forthcoming in the blog.

J.P. Stevens Defeats Keyport For MCC Summer League Title
While Middlesex Hangs On To Edge Bridgewater At Bound Brook

Note: Sorry that I haven't updated the home page much in the past week. I didn't get a chance to post information on what happened on Thursday and Friday in the blog until Friday night since I was at the Kean Ironman Challenge pretty much from noon time until it finished. However, I spent much of the past couple days getting caught up. If you don't see anything new here, check out the blog.

It wasn't easy, or pretty, but for a J.P. Stevens program that went 1-21 this past season, a win over Keyport in the Championship Game of the 2010 Middlesex County College Summer League is a step in the right direction. The Hawks were tied with the Red Raiders at 21-21 with 12:38 remaining when they embarked on a decisive 10-2 spurt over a span of 9:02 to take a 31-23 lead en route to a 32-27 victory.

Victor Quan played a key role in the run with a baseline jumper that sparked the run, and three steals that led to other scores including a layup of his own at the 7:30 mark. Quan had eight points along with league MVP, Mike Reuben, who netted three free throws early in the second half for a 19-15 lead. Marvin Crawford added seven points while Brandon Ahmed chipped in with five as the Hawks used a balanced attack while forcing 23 turnovers that were converted into 15 points. See details in the blog.

After the Championship Game at Middlesex C.C., GMC Hoops went back on the road up 287 North to Route 28 East, and Bound Brook High School to see the Middlesex Blue Jays in action. Following a 54-30 victory by top seeded Watchung Hills over Somerville in their regular season finale, the Jays got 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists from soon to be senior, John Santoro to take a 33-22 lead with 3:30 remaining, but Bridgewater rallied with a 10-0 spurt the rest of the game, and just missed a last second shot as Middlesex escaped with a 33-32 victory to earn the sixth seed in the playoffs with a 4-4 overall record.
