2022-23 GMC Top Active Scorers

South River’s Lazaro Rodriguez puts up a shot in a non-conference game versus Keyport last January. Rodriguez, the highest active returning scorer in the GMC, now ranks 6th on the Rams all time scoring list with 1,219 points.

Check out the 2022-23 GMC Top Active Scorers. A number of top scorers from the Greater Middlesex Conference including several 1,000 point scorers, have graduated and moved on, but there are also a good number of top players coming back this season.

2022-23 GMC Top Active Scorers–Players Graduated

The GMC lost six 1,000 point scorers to graduation: Colonia’s Saivon Pressley (1,469 points), Metuchen’s Dominic Schiappa (1,372 points), Timothy Christian’s Gian Wagner (1,043 points), Edison’s Niko Barnes (1,017 points), Middlesex’s Michael Salvatore (1,010 points), Wardlaw-Hartridge’s Mehkai Huey (1,009 points).

Barnes (now at Compass Academy), Salvatore (now at Misericordia), and Huey all scored their 1,000th in their final games. Barnes also finished as the all time leading scorer at Edison as he surpassed the previous mark set by Tom McKenzie in 1971 (1,003 points).

In total, there were 58 of the top active scorers from a year ago that have moved on and graduated. However, there are 43 players returning along with two new players to the league in Michael Jones (formerly of Trenton Catholic) with 722 points and Jeremy Clayville (formerly of DePaul Catholic) with 583 points.


2022-23 Players Returning–GMC Top Active Scorers

Currently, there are three boys basketball players in the Greater Middlesex Conference with 1,000 career points this season. Lazaro Rodriguez of South River (1,219 points), Jack Zink of Calvary Christian (1,204 points), and Brandon Dean of South Plainfield (1,133 points).

The next GMC boys hoops player closing in on 1,000 points for his career is Michael Jones of St. Thomas Aquinas, who currently has 989 points. Jones, who played his first two seasons at Trenton Catholic, had 722 points coming into the 2022-23 season.

South Amboy’s Brandon Gasiewski could become the second player in his family to reach 1,000 after his older brother Kyle Gasiewski (1,382 points). Below is the list of the top active scorers with at least 200 points in the GMC as of the end of play on January 16, 2023:
