2021 South Amboy Holiday Tourney Schedule and Bracket

Middlesex Replaces Henry Hudson to Represent GMC Along with Guvs and South River

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ—On Saturday, GMC Hoops learned from South Amboy head boys basketball coach, Matt Wiater, that the 2021 South Amboy Tournament is still on.  The holiday tourney, which usually is part of a GMC vs. Shore Challenge played between South Amboy, South River, Henry Hudson, and Keansburg, and rotates to each of the schools as sites every year, lost one of the original teams when Henry Hudson was forced to drop out.

However, Middlesex, which was originally supposed to play in its annual tournament, the Mike Shello Holiday Tourney in Dunellen, before it was cancelled on Christmas Eve, has been added as a late entry to replace Henry Hudson.  The Blue Jays, from the Greater Middlesex Conference’s Blue Division along with South River, will take on South Amboy in the 2nd game of the opening round doubleheader on Tuesday, December 28th.

Meanwhile, South River will begin play in the tournament on Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM when it battles Keansburg as originally scheduled.  Since 2004, the Rams have appeared in the most finals (11) and won the most championships (6) while compiling a record of 21-11 in this GMC vs. Shore Challenge.  The Rams last won the tourney in 2018, which was the second of a back to back.

During the same period, South Amboy has appeared in 6 finals, and won 3 titles including its last championship in 2013 while posting a record of 15-16.  Keansburg, the last tourney winner in 2019, has a record of 12-19 in the tourney since 2004, appeared in 6 finals and won 3 titles also.  Middlesex is making its first appearance in this tournament, has gone 26-6 with 15 finals appearances and 10 championships in the Mike Shello Tournament since 2004.

South Amboy will be playing its first games of the season in its holiday tournament.  The Guys were slated to originally play Spotswood in the 2021 Friends of South Amboy Charity Basketball Games Showcase on December 18th, but the game was postponed due to a COVID situation.
