College Hoops Coverage–Game #1–Globe Tech @ Middlesex County College

EDISON, NJ–For the fourth straight season, GMC Hoops is covering Middlesex County College as part of its college hoops coverage. The Blue Colts have accomplished quite a bit in the past three seasons under the direction of former Piscataway standout, Corey Lowery. It was the season opener for Middlesex, while it was the third game for Globe, which won its opener over Hagerstown Community College (126-93) and lost to Harcum College (115-89).

In this contest, Middlesex really struggled from the perimeter as Arman Wilson, Shamai Santiago, J.J. D’Amico, and Deryk Lockett failed to connect consistently for the Blue Colts. In addition, the Colts struggled to stop the fast breaking Knights, which scored a good deal of points in transition. David Mofunanya, who played his high school ball in Englewood, New Jersey, stood out as a bright spot for the Colts in the 104-73 loss. Edwin Guerra, a Perth Amboy native, and a double-double machine when he played at PAHS, had some solid efforts at the line along with a near three point play late in the first half.

By the time the site had arrived at the game, Middlesex County College was already trailing by a good deal. With under four minutes to go in the first half, Globe led by a score of 38-21. The Knights then closed out the first half with an 11-9 run for a 49-30 lead at the intermission. In the second half, the New York school blew the game open with a 35-17 showing over the first 9:35 for an 84-47 lead with less than ten and a half minutes remaining. From there, M.C.C. did what it could to make the game respectable in the end with a 26-20 showing to round out the final, 104-73 rout.

The Colts, which compete in Region XIX in Division III of the NJCAA, had 43 points in the second half, but gave up 55 points. They missed a number of shots inside including a breakaway layup by Lockett early in the second half. Globe thwarted other opportunities by blocking other shots in the paint. Middlesex was taking on a team in Globe that is from Region XV, which plays teams from around the Southeastern New York area including Long Island. The Knights had plenty of size and athleticism, but more importantly, made their shots while forcing the Colts not to make theirs.

Middlesex will resume their schedule on Saturday, November 21st, when it takes on Atlantic Cape Community College at home. GMC Hoops will be seeing the Colts next on December 10, 2009 when they take on Northampton Community College. The web site will have a more detailed article on the game as well as some video highlights posted soon. On Wednesday, GMC Hoops travels up to Madison in Morris County to watch a Division III game as Drew hosts crosstown rival FDU-Florham.
