GMC Gridiron–Week Three–Quick Picks–Saturday Afternoon

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–The third week of the 2013 Greater Middlesex Conference football season will conclude on Saturday afteroon with three crossover games between the GMC and Shore Conferences on the schedule including a battle of unbeatens between Point Pleasant Beach and Spotswood.

Point Pleasant Beach (2-0) at Spotswood (2-0)–Both the Garnet Gulls and the Chargers are off to solid starts at 2-0, but Point Beach has a more impressive victory in its first two by edging Dunellen last week at home (15-6). Spotswood is coming off a solid offensive performance against Keansburg (60-0), and will be playing at home. Point Beach is yet to play anyone in their division of the Shore Conference. The Gulls got three field goals in their win over Dunellen and have won seven straight over GMC foes since 2007.  Point Beach, a choice school, gets the edge here. Prediction:    Point Pleasant Beach wins, 18-14.

Dunellen (1-1) @ Mater Dei (2-0)–Dunellen could have a bit more of a struggle on its hands with Mater Dei this year than the previous times these two teams have played. Mater Dei is not your father’s Mater Dei team of years ago. They have upgraded their offensive line, and have a talented back in Tysaun White. The Seraphs have had it a bit easy to this point though with contests against Keansburg and Cardinal McCarrick. Dunellen, led by QB David Johnson, and RBs Nassan Anderson and Tim Francisco, will definitely be a step up for the Monmouth County school.  Prediction:  Dunellen wins, 27-21.

South River (2-0) @ Keansburg (0-2)–Doug Ryan had another spectacular week on the ground for the Rams in their victory over Metuchen. Ryan has seven touchdowns already this season. Meanwhile, South River’s defense is anchored by hoops standout, Sean Darrar at MLB. Keansburg is reeling after losing to Spotswood, 60-0 and has lost the last five meetings between these two schools. It won’t get any easier for the Titans as they will travel to Dunellen for a week four contest.  Prediction:  South River wins, 42-6.

GMC Gridiron will not be attending any of the games on Saturday, but will be out at Columbia Park in Dunellen next week for its first game there in four seasons.
