GMC Hoops Game Notes—Edison @ J.P. Stevens—City of Light Trophy Game—February 25, 2022

NORTH EDISON, NJ—GMC Hoops reviewed the footage from the 2022 City of Light Trophy Game between J.P. Stevens and Edison played on Friday afternoon.  While reviewing the video of the contest, GMC Hoops compiled notes and statistics, and posted them here for review.  Stats were collected via the GameChanger app.


First Quarter

Edison did not score until the 5:26 mark on an up and under move by Brian Hobson

Stevens made its first two shots of the game to go up 4-0.

Stevens calls a timeout with 1:10 left in qtr after an 11-2 spurt by Edison capped by a Justyn Britton putback for an 11-6 lead.  JPS has made only 1 of its last 7 shots.

Three lead changes in qtr.  Largest JPS lead 4.  Largest Edison lead 5.  Raucous crowd at Stevens.

Edison led 13-9 after one.  Stevens ended frame by going 3 of 4 from the line.  Edison was 6 of 14 from the floor including 1 of 3 from long distance.  JPS (0-5 FG) was without FG for last 4:47.

Eagles were 0 of 1 from the foul line.  Only had two turnovers that didn’t result in any J.P. Stevens points.  Edison had 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

Brian Hobson led the Eagles with 5 points on 2 of 3 FG. including 1 of 1 from three.  Hobson also had 3 rebounds and a charge.  Niko Barnes added 4 points on 2 of 5 FG and an assist.

Stevens went 3 of 10 from the floor, and 1 of 8 over last 7:18.  Hawks were 0 of 4 from three and 3 of 4 from the line.  JPS had no turnovers and 5 rebounds in period.

Eli Scott scored 7 points for Stevens on 2 of 3 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the charity stripe.  Eli Peters had the other 2 points on 1 of 3 shooting.


Second Quarter

7:47—Scott picks up 2nd foul for Stevens.  Elisha White makes both FTs for a 15-9 Edison lead.

5:45–Hobson draws second charge of the game.  Stevens without an FG for 7:03.  Eli Peters picks up 2nd foul.

4:49–Ryan Hoefer putback.  First JPS FG in 7:59 after going 0 of 11 and just 1 of 14 over span of 10:29.  Edison leads 20–11.

Edison ended qtr on a 10-5 run capped by a leaner from Barnes with five seconds left in period for a 30-16 halftime lead.

Eagles were 7 of 15 from the floor including 0 of 1 from three.  Edison made 3 of 4 FTs and had 3 turnovers.  JPS had 0 points off Edison miscues.

EHS shooting 13 of 29 from the floor including 1 of 4 from three, and 3 of 5 FTs.  Eagles have 5 turnovers.  Stevens didn’t convert any miscues for points.

Barnes scored 10 points in the qtr on 5 of 8 shooting.  White scored 5 points including 3 of 4 from the line.  

Joe Greer had 6 rebounds and a block.  White (6 rebounds) and Greer (7 rebounds) combine for 13 of Edison’s 21 rebounds.

Stevens made only 3 of 12 shot attempts in 2nd including 1 of 3 from beyond the arc.  Hawks committed 3 turnovers in frame.  Edison converted those into 4 points.

Three different players scored for Stevens:  Aurko Sakar (3 points), Scott (2 points), and Hoefer (2 points).  Scott had 9 points on 3 of 6 shooting and 3 of 4 FTs in the half.


Third Quarter

4:25—Peters picks up 3rd foul.  Barnes misses both FTs.   Edison misses 4 straight FTs to open 2nd half.  JPS scores 4 points off two EHS turnovers to trail 30-20.

3:58–Edison calls full timeout after an Aurko Sarkar three from right wing caps 9-0 JPS run that closes the gap to 30-25.  Hawks connected on 3 of first 5 shots of 2nd half.  Eagles haven’t scored in last 4:04.

3:08–Edison calls 30 second timeout after missing 6 shots and nearly turning the ball over on one possession.

2:51–Greer scores on layup underneath from right side off slick feed Barnes for first Edison points in 5:11, and a 32-25 lead.

0:00–JPS ends 3rd by scoring 6 of the last 9 points including a three from Scott and 2 FTs from Sarkar to close the gap to 35-31.

Edison was only 2 of 12 FG from the floor including one of three from long distance.  Barnes injured late in period, and left game with one second left in qtr.  

Eagles had 5 turnovers in qtr and went 0 of 4 from the line.  JPS scored 6 points ofc those miscues.  Hobson (3 pts) and Greer (2 pts) account for only EHS scoring in qtr.

Stevens was 4 of 10 from the floor including 2 of 6 from three, and 5 of 6 from three.  Hawks only had one turnover, which Edison didn’t convert into points.

Sarkar had 6 points in the period including a three and 3 of 4 FTs while Peters made two FGs for 4 points.


Fourth Quarter

5:25–Peters picks up 4th foul.  Stevens scores. off Eagles turnover earlier for 35-33 EHS lead.

4:45—Edison calls timeout after Sarkar goes coast to coast for layup to tie game at 35-35.  Eagles scoreless for last 5:16.  JPS makes 2 of first 4 shots of period.

4:35–Hobson knocks down three off screen by Greer and kickout by Justyn Britton to givves Edison its first points in 5:26, and a 38-35 lead.

3:45–Scott sinks three from left wing off nice penetration and kickout by Sarkar after White scored on putback for Edison.  Eagles lead 40-38.

2:53—Scott fouled by Britton and makes both to tie the game at 40-40.  Barnes left game again.

1:51—Sarkar sinks three from right wing after eluding defender for JPS first lead since 6-5 in first qtr at 43-40.

1:06—JPS calls timeout after a near Edison steal.  Both teams in bonus.  Eagles missed front end of 1 and 1 with 1:29 left.  Hawks still lead 43-40.

32.0–Edison calls time after two FTs by Peters with 36 seconds left for a 45-40 lead.

11.6–JPS—Sarkar fouled by Sebio—makes both FTs for a 12-0 run over last 3:57.

7.1—Edison—Hobson fouled—makes both ends of bonus for a 47-42 JPS lead.  Eagles call time.

0.0—JPS wins 47-42—Hawks hold Edison without FG over last 4:09 of contest.

Edison was 2 of 10 FG in qtr and 4 of 22 FG in 2nd half.  Eagles 0-1 FT in qtr and 0-5 FT in 2nd half.  

Eagles had 6 turnovers in qtr and JPS scored 5 points off miscues.  Eagles had 11 turnovers in 2nd half for 16 in game.

Stevens went 4 of 8 from the floor in the 4th including 2 of 6 from three.  Hawks only had 2 turnovers, which Edison only converted into two points.

For the game, JPS was 14 of 40 from the field including 5 of 18 from the line, and made 14 of 17 from the charity stripe.   Hawks only had 6 turnovers.

There were 4 lead changes and two ties in the contest.  Edison’s largest lead was 15 at 28-13 while JPS’ biggest lead was 7 at 47-40.

Sarkar scored all 18 of his points over last 17:46 of the game.  He made 5 of 11 FGs including 3 of 6 from three and clicked on 5 of 6 FTs.  Sarkar also collected 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block.

Scott added 17 points on 5 of 12 FGs including 2 of 4 from long distance, and made 5 of 7 FTs.  Scott also had 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
