Here are highlights from the action in the overtime thriller in the 2017 NJSIAA Tournament of Champions Quarterfinals between fifth seeded and Group 2 Champion, Newark Westside, and fourth seeded and Group 3 Champion, Teaneck at Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.
Teaneck, led by former Roselle Catholic standout, Leondre Washington, jumped out to a 20-15 lead before Newark Westside tweaked its zone press, and finished the first half on a 15-3 run, and then scored 10 of the first 16 points of the third to take a 40-29 lead on a three pointer.
The Highwaymen battled back with a 30-18 surge that was capped by a three point play from Washington with 13.7 seconds left for a 59-58 lead. Newark Westside had two opportunities to retake the lead at the free throw line in the closing seconds, but only made 1 of 4 from the line, and the game went to overtime tied at 59-59.
Teaneck would prevail in the extra session as the Highwaymen took the opening tip, and knocked down a three pointer from the top of the key to spark an 11-3 showing to wrap up the 70-62 victory. Ja’Quaye James led four different Teaneck players in double figures with 21 points including two threes and 9 made free throws.
Washington finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. Corey Gordon and Cheikh Sow chipped in with 11 points with Gordon adding 9 rebounds while Sow had 6 rebounds and 6 blocks. Kirk Parsons led Westside with 15 points while Quayon Williams-King chipped in with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.
Quaion Taylor contributed with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Alif Beyah also chipped in with 10 points and 2 rebounds. With the victory, Teaneck improved to 27-6 overall on the season, and advanced to the TOC Semifinals to take on top seeded Patrick School. Westside finished its season at 25-7.
