NORTH EDISON, NJ–With a little over two weeks to go until the GMCT seeding meeting is scheduled to take place, the J.P. Stevens Hawks were looking to add another big win to their resume when they hosted the third ranked Colonia Patriots on Wednesday night. In a game that had been rescheduled after school was closed on Tuesday in the wake of the recent blizzard, Colonia needed a big effort from its top players, Chase Barneys and Kolby Chapmann, and the Patriots got just that from the senior duo.

Barneys scored a game high 22 points while Chapmann added 15 to lead Colonia to a riveting 54-49 overtime win over a game J.P. Stevens squad before an enthusiastic crowd in Hawk Nation. Barneys and Chapmann scored all 8 Colonia points in the extra session including six by Barneys to break away from a 46-46 tie at the end of regulation. Barneys capped the win with a steal for a layup at the buzzer. Mike Lionikis, who connected on two threes in the fourth including the one that tied the game at 46-46 with 34.1 seconds remaining in regulation, led the Hawks in defeat with 15 points while Alex Corrigan added 14 and Rishav Ghosh chipped in with 10.

Following a 13-0 tear that covered much of the third period, Colonia led 35-26, but Stevens battled back by scoring 20 of the next 31 points as Corrigan sank a three and a jumper during the stretch while Lionikis, who was saddled with two first quarter fouls, led the rally with 8, and Ghosh came up with a couple scores. In the extra session though, Colonia pulled away by out scoring JPS by an 8-3 margin for the win as the Hawks didn’t have a field goal in the extra frame. Both teams had 11 field goals in the game while J.P. Stevens enjoyed a 15-12 edge in points scored from beyond the arc, but Colonia won this game at the line.

Led by Barneys (perfect 7 of 7 FTs) and Chapmann (5 of 6 FTs), the Patriots outscored the Hawks by a 20-12 margin from the charity stripe. Colonia was 80 percent from the line while J.P. Stevens was just 48 percent. The Hawks had more players get into the books and double figures with seven and three respectively, but Colonia got 69 percent of its scoring from Barneys and Chapmann. The first period was closely contested with Colonia taking a 14-13 lead. Four different players scored for the Pats including Barneys with 6, Chapmann with 4, sophomore Frank Lehman, who got his only field goal of the game to open the scoring, and Mike Lacko, who netted two free throws.

Stevens had three different players score in the first including Corrigan, who netted two threes for 6 points, Lionikis had 4 on two field goals, and Shivam Patel added 3. Colonia had its 14 points on 4 field goals, a three, and 3 of 4 from the foul line while Stevens scored its 13 points on two treys, three field goals, and one of three from the charity stripe. The second quarter started with Colonia scoring 6 of the first 9 points including a three by Bryce Barneys for a 20-16 lead, but JPS responded with an 8-2 spurt to end the half for a 24-22 lead at the intermission. Mike Katims had a field goal, and Corrigan made 3 of 4 from the line before Patel had a layup at the buzzer for the two point edge at the break.

Patel then opened the third with a jumper from the right elbow to give Stevens a 26-22 lead, but then Colonia scored its 13 unanswered points. Barneys kicked off the run with a layup at the 5:33 mark followed by three by Chapmann at the 4:44 mark, and a baseline jumper by Chapman, and a score by Lacko for a nine point advantage with under three minutes remaining in the period. Stevens didn’t get going again until the final minute of play when Corrigan nailed his third trey of the game with 49.6 seconds to go in the stanza, and Lionikis added a bucket at the 34.1 second mark to close the gap to 36-31 heading into the fourth. The Hawks continued to chip away at the deficit in the fourth.

Colonia opened the final period by scoring 5 of the first 8 points including two free throws by Lacko at the 4:31 mark for a 41-34 lead. Corrigan accounted for most of the JPS scoring to this point with a pull-up jumper from the right side. The Hawks then scored 12 of the last 17 points of regulation as Ghosh made two free throws, and added a layup while Lionikis sank a three with 2:49 to go in the fourth to narrow the deficit to 42-39. Trailing 46-43 with under a minute to play, Stevens got the ball to Lionikis again for the game tying three from the top of the key. JPS then forced a Colonia turnover with 2.8 seconds left in regulation, but Lionikis desperation heave from about 35 feet in front of the J.P. Stevens student section was off the mark.

In the extra session, neither team scored for a little more than the first minute and a half before Barneys was fouled on a drive to the hoop and made two free throws for a 48-46 lead at the 2:27 mark. A little less than a half minute later, Stevens retook the lead as Ghosh drew a foul, and made 1 of 2 FTs on his first trip. Then, on the missed second free throw, the Hawks managed to get the offensive board, and Ghosh drew another foul to make two more free throws for a 49-48 lead with 1:59 remaining. Barneys then gave Colonia the lead for good with a drive from near mid-court for a layup with 1:15 to play. Chapmann followed that with a pair of free throws to give the Pats a 52-49 edge before Barneys finished the win off with a buzzer beating layup.

With the 54-49 victory, Colonia improved to 9-3 overall on the season including an 8-1 mark in divisional play. J.P. Stevens fell to 8-5 overall including a 6-4 mark in the GMC White. Both teams return to action on Thursday with Colonia hosting Edison while Stevens takes on New Brunswick at home.
