GMC Senior All-Star Games Set for Wednesday

All-Star Doubleheader at Middlesex College

EDISON, NJ – On Wednesday, the 2022-23 Greater Middlesex Conference basketball season will conclude with the 2023 GMC Senior All-Star Games.  The All-Star Doubleheader will be played at Middlesex College with the Girls All-Star Game starting at 5:30 followed by the Boys All-Star Game at 7:00 PM.

This is the first time that Middlesex College will be hosting the event since 2019.  Proceeds from the showcase will go to the FightStrong Foundation.  The FightStrong Foundation is an organization that aims to help improve the quality of lives for those battling cancer. It has and will raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and use a community driven approach to help others battling cancer.  The organization is run by former South River hoops standout, Joey Nigro and his family.

Nigro, who played four years varsity hoops for Rodney Harris at South River, teamed up with the likes of Derrick Whitaker to lead South River to an overall record of 65-44 including a 28-24 mark in divisional play.  As a freshman, Nigro was a member of the South River team that reached the Central Jersey Group 1 semifinals in 2016.  Nigro, the younger brother of South River two sport standout, Mario Nigro, ended up 829 career points, 336 rebounds, 178 assists, 146 steals, and 28 blocks.

After graduating from South River, Nigro joined Whitaker up at FDU-Florham, and played in 25 games as a freshman in the 2019-20 season and then another six as a sophomore in 2020-21, but didn’t participate in 2021-22 after being diagnosed with Stage 2B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on May 1st, 2021.  Nigro underwent six months of treatment before being declared cancer-free.

Rosters will be posted soon.  GMC Hoops plans to cover the action from both games.  Below are the senior girls and boys that have been confirmed to participate in the GMC Senior All-Star Games on Wednesday:
