Hamilton Park Summer League–Some Playoff Results–August 3, 2016

Sayreville Advances to Quarterfinals; Old Bridge Falls

JERSEY CITY, NJ–On Wednesday afternoon, GMC Hoops took another trip up to Jersey City to take in action from the 2016 Hamilton Park Summer League Playoffs. Both GMC teams in the league were in action as 13th seeded Old Bridge took on 12th seeded Dickinson and 19th seeded Sayreville, fresh off an upset win over 14th seeded Colts Neck on Tuesday, took on 11th seeded Randolph.

In the first game, Old Bridge and Dickinson went down to the wire in a rematch of a regular season game won by the Knights. Old Bridge gave way to a 15-5 spurt from the middle of the first period into the early portion of the second as Dickinson used its trapping defense to set up its transition game, and also netted some threes for a 24-16 lead.

The Knights then stepped things up defensively as they prevented Dickinson from scoring for just under six and a half minutes to end the first half and start the third period. Old Bridge would take advantage of that as Rich Calandrino and Kyle Paris stepped things up offensively.

Calandrino scored on a three pointer and then again on a conventional three point play to give the Knights a 27-26 lead, and then Paris scored the last six OB points of the third to increase the edge to 35-30 heading into the fourth. After Dickinson scored the first three points to close the gap to two, Will Osvald got a layup and then Paris added a score for a 41-34 lead.

Unfortunately, the Knights weren’t able to finish off the Rams, which ended the game on a 20-8 surge that included a clutch three at the 3:28 mark, and then a steal for a layup at the 3:10 to tie the game at 41-41. Then, after a score by Calandrino with 2:45 remaining for a 43-41 lead, Dickinson took the lead for good on a three pointer from the right wing with 2:09 left, and went on to win 54-49.

In the nightcap game, Sayreville trailed 30-27 at the half after a Randolph three in the closing seconds of the second period, and then the Rams opened the third quarter on a 7-1 run for a 37-28 lead. However, the Bombers battled back with a 23-5 surge sparked by threes from Elijah Clark and Henny Mautes and highlighted by a layup in the closing seconds of the third by Ope Olaloko, and a layup by Ryan O’Leary and a three by Jahsim Floyd to open the fourth for a 51-42 lead.

Randolph tried to make a game of it with a 15-8 spurt that was capped by a three pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining, but the Bombers were able to prevail 62-58 thanks to two free throws by O’Leary with 0.9 seconds left. Below are the GMC scores from the second round of play at the Hamilton Park Summer League playoffs on Wednesday.
