St. Joseph’s Shuts Down Barringer Over Last Three Periods For Easy Win

LINDEN, NJ–On Wednesday night, GMC Hoops traveled over to the Linden Recreation Center to take in the final two games of the night from the third day of action at the 2016 Linden Team Camp. St. Joseph’s was in action against Barringer of Newark and the Super Essex Conference.

After a first quarter that saw the Blue Bears of Barringer jump out to a 12-4 lead on three treys, St. Joseph’s clamped down defensively and limited the Newark school to just six points on two field goals and two free throws over the last 30 minutes of the game for the easy victory.

Letrell West led the charge in the victory for Joes with 12 points while Alanzo Frink chipped in with 9. Xavier Townes added 6 points while Malachi Walker was a perfect 4 of 4 from the line for all 4 of his points. Mike Granda and Sashank Sindhia rounded out the scoring for the Falcons with two free throws each for 2 points.

Prior to the start of St. Joe’s game against Barringer, two Central Jersey schools went at it in a non-conference game as Union Catholic of Scotch Plains and the Union County Conference battled Rutgers Prep of Somerset and the Skyland Conference during the 7:00 PM hour. Rutgers Prep led 35-31 at the half, and then put together a 13-9 showing in the third for a 48-40 lead heading into the final period.

However, Union Catholic rallied with a 21-11 surge, and held a four point lead with less than two minutes to go. Former St. Joseph’s standout, Tony Gamboa drew Rutgers Prep within two again with about a minute to play on a layup from the left side, but the Argonauts couldn’t get any closer as the UC Vikings answered with a score to go back up by four, and then held on for a two point win.

Below are the results from the two games:
