More Games Being Added to MLK Classic

Zebras MLK Jr Roundball Classic Adding Another Day

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Roundball Classic at New Brunswick High School has become a great tradition in recent years.  Now, more games are being added to the MLK Classic. The showcase will now be a two-day event.

More games are slated for a second day on Saturday, January 13, 2024.  New Brunswick High School will be the site of all the games. Judges will be on hand to determine the MVP of each game played in the classic.  Last year’s game MVPs received a plaque honoring their efforts.

GMC teams such as Dunellen, New Brunswick, Piscataway, Sayreville, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Timothy Christian have competed in this mid-season showcase.  Schools from around New Jersey that have also competed in the event include Franklin, Irvington, Jackson Memorial, Plainfield, Roselle, and Trenton.

The MLK Classic at NBHS has gradually grown over the years. From just a couple of games in its early days to five last season.  One of the biggest games of this showcase in the past has been New Brunswick against Franklin. Any time these two neighborhood rivals face off, there is a full house. The Zebras and Warriors are neighborhood rivals although the two schools have not played each other in four years.

Last year’s MLK Roundball Classic featured some of the top teams in the state including St. Thomas Aquinas, Franklin, Irvington, Jackson Memorial, Piscataway, and Roselle.  With more games being added to the MLK Classic, expect more top teams to participate.
