Dunellen High School has had a very long tradition of success in boys basketball. Led for almost three decades by legendary coach Mike Shello, the Destroyers were often a thorn in the sides of a number of Middlesex County teams, especially South Plainfield.
Shello only had one 20-win season in 1966-67. Dunellen began to return to prominence with the arrival of Steve Kania in the early 2000s, and that continued with another fine coach in Bernie Buniak. Buniak’s assistant coach, Howie Horowitz took the reins of the program in 2015 and ultimately guided the Destroyers to back-to-back 20-win seasons behind Tyje’ Kelton.
