GMC Hoops Players of the Game:  Piscataway vs. Sayreville

Sayreville’s Chidi Chukwurah (26 points) and Piscataway’s Isaiah Fowler (27 points) were chosen GMC Hoops Players of the Game in the contest between the Bombers and the Chiefs in Piscataway on January 8th.

GMC Hoops took in the Greater Middlesex Conference crossover between Piscataway and Sayreville at Anthony Gymnasium in Piscataway on Thursday, January 8th.

Trailing 52-43 late in the third, Sayreville rallied from behind for a thrilling 68-67 victory over P-Way in a Greater Middlesex Conference crossover. The Bombers trailed by double-digits on a couple of occasions in the contest before coming back for the win.

Over the final 4:12 of the contest, there were four lead changes and five ties. Sam Jones produced two of those ties with an unconventional four-point play and a traditional three-point play for Sayreville. Isaiah Fowler and Josh Lima netted clutch threes for the Chiefs.

It would come down to a baseline jumper from the right side from Ziyan Jones with about 45 seconds remaining to give Sayreville the lead for good. Sam Jones sealed the victory by making two free throws with 2.7 seconds to play. Chidi Chukwurah almost collected a triple-double with 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists for the Bombers, while Isaiah Fowler led the Chiefs in a losing cause with a career high 27 points.

Both Chukwurah and Fowler were selected as GMC Hoops Players of the Game.

Sayreville:  Chidi Chukwurah

The 6’3” Bombers’ senior forward earned the GMC Hoops Player of the Game honor for the second time this season.  Chukwurah almost collected a triple-double with a team-high 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists.  His last assist helped set up the go-ahead score on a baseline jumper from Ziyan Jones.  Chukwurah tallied his 26 points on 11 field goals and 4 of 7 from the foul line.  So far this season, Chukwurah is averaging 21.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest.

Piscataway:  Isaiah Fowler

The three-year varsity player scored a game-high 27 points in a losing cause for the Chiefs.  Fowler scored Piscataway’s first 10 points of the game on two threes, a layup, and two foul shots.  After a lull in the second quarter, Fowler came on strong in the final two periods with 15 more points.  He tallied his 27 points on 10 total field goals, including five threes, and two foul shots.  Fowler, who is averaging 16.5 points per game thus far this season, connected on a buzzer-beating three from inside half court to round out the 68-67 final score.
