J.P. Stevens Hawks – 20-Win Seasons

One of two schools in Edison Township, J.P. Stevens began playing boys basketball in the 1964-65 school year.  More known for its success on the gridiron during the late 1970s to mid-1980s, the Hawks have only occasionally managed to have successful seasons in boys’ basketball.

Most of the Hawks’ boys basketball success came during the 1980s under head coach Vin Ciraulo.  During his time at Stevens, the Hawks reached the MCT/GMCT Elite Eight four times including two GMCT final appearances in 1987 and 1989.  Both times, the Tony Newsom-led Hawks faced East Brunswick.

The Hawks’ duo Newsom and Rocky Pravato fell to the Bears in the 1987 GMCT Championship, but Newsom avenged the defeat by leading JPS past EB in 1989.  Stevens would wait nearly 20 years before having another 20-win season.

Coached by James Cardillo, the Hawks of 2007-08 reached the GMCT Quarterfinals with the likes of another 1,000 point scorer in Kenny Bland and teammate Myles Reuben.  The Hawks have never won more than 15 games after that season.
