Old Bridge Knights – 20-Win Seasons

Old Bridge High School didn’t come into being until the 1994-95 academic year.  Before September 1994, Old Bridge Township boys and girls basketball split into two camps:  Madison Central and Cedar Ridge.  The Cougars of Cedar Ridge, led by 1,500-point scorer Tim Klag, enjoyed a magical ride to the 1988 GMCT Semifinals.

However, before OBHS, Madison Central was the only school in Old Bridge to have a 20-win season.  Coached by the legendary John Somogyi, the Spartans garnered the most wins in township history with a 20-7 mark in the 1976-77 season.  Somogyi moved on to even greater heights when he coached at his alma mater of St. Peter’s.

Former Matawan standout and 1,000 point scorer, Jim Macomber took the reins at Old Bridge in the 2012-13 season, and big things started happening right away.  Led by the tandem of Sultan Amin and Tyler Drews, the first two 1,000-point scorers in Knights history, Old Bridge reached the 2013 GMCT Final Four.

The Knights returned to the GMCT Semifinals in 2018 and lost to an upstart Colonia team that was the first 7th seed to play in a GMCT Championship.  The following year, Old Bridge eclipsed the mark for wins set by Somogyi’s Spartans with a 21-5 record in 2018-19.
