Perth Amboy Magnet Patriots – 20-Win Seasons

Opening in the 1975-76 school year, Perth Amboy Tech, which eventually became Perth Amboy Magnet a few years ago, struggled to go 2-36 over its first three seasons of boys basketball.  After going 9-14 in 1978-79, Amboy Tech would go 19-91 over its next five seasons.

The Tradesmen as they were called back then didn’t have its first .500 or better season until 1984-85 when they finished 11-10 overall.  Amboy Tech eventually became the Patriots with another .500 season, it qualified for the 1985-86 Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament.

Led by the likes of Ferdinand Williams, Brian Meeney (who went on to become the head coach of St. Thomas Aquinas football), Peter Price, and Jose Crespo, the Patriots put together a four-year record of 74-22 from 1989 to 1993.  Metuchen and Seton Hall legend, Tom Flaherty coached the squad to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1991-92 and 1992-93.

Over those two years, Amboy Tech won at least a share of the GMC Gold Division crown.  In addition, the Patriots reached the GMCT Elite Eight, won the 1993 Central Jersey Group 1 sectional title and NJSIAA Group 1 state title.  The Patriots were also the first GMC team to participate in the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions in 1993.

Perth Amboy Tech wouldn’t have another 20-win season until almost 25 years later when the Patriots went 21-6 in 2016-17.  Pedro Gonzalez, Kyle Gregory, and Javon Fisher (now an assistant coach at Timothy Christian) were key players on that squad coached by John Meyer.
