Formerly known as Hoffman High School, South Amboy has had a rich history of boys and girls basketball over the years. The Governors also enjoyed the unique distinction of being the lowest seed (24th) to reach the GMCT Quarterfinals since the tourney’s Play-In round began back in 2007.
The 2013-14 South Amboy Governors, coached by Lenny Reyes, a 1,000 point scorer at J.F. Kennedy during his playing days, was a team led by two 1,000 point scorers in Steve Herdman and Joe Fruncillo. The Guvs finished 2nd in the GMC Gold behind Timothy Christian.
South Amboy got its revenge by stunning the Tigers in overtime in the 2014 GMCT Quarterfinals to advance to the Elite Eight before losing to top-seeded St. Joseph’s, led by NBA standout Karl Anthony-Towns. Meanwhile, the 1970-71 edition of the Hoffman Governors, led by Gary Lange, won the most games in school history and reached the MCT Quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion, Metuchen.
