After opening in 1977, the Spotswood Chargers won the Central Jersey Group 1 Championship in 1980. It was the only sectional championship for the Chargers, and the 1979-80 team didn’t even win 20 games (finished 17-9). Spotswood went on to endure another two decades of mediocrity before turning the corner under the direction of head coach Steve Mate. The Chargers enjoyed their first 20-win season in 2008-09, and performed the trick four more times since.
