GMC Gridiron Preview–Week Nine–#3 Woodbridge @ Edison
October 28, 2011 on 5:55 pm | In GMC Football | Comments OffSOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Gridiron plans to head down to Edison High School to see another matchup in the GMC Red between the third ranked Barrons of Woodbridge, winners over Monroe last week, and the Edison Eagles, which are coming off a bye a week ago. This is the second time we are seeing both teams this year. Here are the particulars for this game:
Current Weather Conditions–South Plainfield, New Jersey at 6:50 PM on Friday evening
- Sky Conditions: Cloudy
- Temperature: 46 degrees
- Humidity: 65 percent
- Dew Point: 34 degrees
- Barometer: 30.20 inches of Hg (Mercury) and rising
- Winds: NE @ 1 mph with gusts up to 5 mph
- High Temperature: 50 degrees
- Low Temperature: 33 degrees
Weather Forecast–Edison at 7:00 PM EDT on Friday night
A cold front passed through yesterday, and brought about a half inch of rain and much colder temperatures. The mercury was just above freezing for a low on Friday morning, and they were the coldest they’ve been since April. The temperature warmed up nicely into the low 50s around Central Jersey, and should be chilly by game time tonight. However, clouds from an approaching nor’easter will keep temperatures from approaching the lows we had this morning. Temps will be in the mid 40s under cloudy skies so you are going to want to bundle up. The weather will be going further downhill on Saturday with snow possible by Saturday night. See more details on the latest weather in the GWC Blog and Journal.

Game Outlook
The Barrons made short work of the Monroe Falcons last Friday night at Priscoe Field. In the 42-10 victory, Woodbridge scored on each of its first six possessions including five touchdown passes by QB Kyle Anderson. With a 35 point lead at the half, the Barrons didn’t even play its starters in the second half, which may have a great benefit down the road when we get into the rough and tumble Central Jersey Group III State Tournament.
Speaking of rest, Edison had a bye week, and will be coming back to play at home. The Eagles have won both of their games at home this year with a 40-32 victory over East Brunswick in week two, and a 12-0 win over Monroe several weeks ago. Ken McGotty leads a potent offensive attack along with Amir Brown. Julius Collier also has the capability of making the big play like the fake punt he put together in the fourth quarter of the victory over Monroe.
Woodbridge has plenty of big playmakers on its roster with Anthony Nyers, Cody Zalasar, Juan Bonilla, Mika Graham, and Isaiah Johnson. Zalasar caught three touchdown passes last week while Nyers and Graham added TD scores and Johnson had the lone TD run for the Barrons. Edison will need to keep Woodbridge from out of the end zone, and the Eagles will have to do it by keeping the football for long stretches. Going three and out like Monroe did last week is not an option here.

GMC Gridiron–Week Nine–Game Capsules–Saturday Afternoon
October 28, 2011 on 5:25 pm | In GMC Football | Comments OffBrief Look At The Five Week Nine Contests Around The GMC On Saturday
SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Gridiron is looking to build off its undefeated week last week with more good picks for week nine. The site is hoping to get things rolling with the other action from the fall leagues this weekend. In the meantime, the site will be heading out to Edison High School to see the Eagles in action against the third ranked Woodbridge Barrons. It will be the second time that the site will be seeing both EHS and WHS. There are 14 games on tap for this week. Nine are on Friday night, and five are on Saturday. Let’s take a look at this week’s outlook for Saturday afternoon’s games:
Middlesex (5-1) at Metuchen (4-3)–This will be the toughest game in the GMC Blue this weekend. The Blue Jays are coming off a bye while Metuchen is coming off a solid win over South River and looking to put themselves in good position to get into the state playoffs. The Bulldogs have a solid ground game behind Dorian Miller, and RB Errol Lindo. Middlesex also has a solid ground game with Al-Tarik Rushing, Sean Gilbert, and Will Roach. Both teams played Highland Park with the Blue Jays shutting down the Owls at home by a score of 6-0. Metuchen fell prey to Nadre Hepburn in a loss to its long time rival. The only blemish on Middlesex’s record this season was a 20-6 loss two weeks ago to Point Pleasant Beach. Prediction: Middlesex wins 20-6.
Highland Park (3-4) at Cardinal McCarrick (1-6)–The Owls are looking to even up their record and qualify for the Central Jersey Group I state playoffs so they have more to play for here. The Eagles are young and lack depth, but continue to fight. Quawi Batchelor and Quatay Niesmith are two potent weapons in Highland Park’s ground game while Tyler Rios, Manny McClain, and others lead a solid defense. HPHS should win easily here. Prediction: Highland Park wins 40-6.
Keyport (2-5) at Spotswood (3-4)–This could be a tough matchup for the Chargers even though they have a solid QB in Dean Vitale along with basketball standout Corey Brown at wideout. The Red Raiders are 0-2 against the GMC so far this year while the Chargers are 1-0 against the Shore this season. Spotswood has had a lot of home cooking this year with the majority of its games at home. Keyport lost handily to both Metuchen and Carteret. The Chargers will have a tough fight on their hands, but should emerge victorious. Prediction: Spotswood wins 24-20.
Asbury Park (6-0) at South River (1-6)–At the beginning of the year, some might have thought that this would have been a CJ Group I playoff preview. However, the Rams have been hit hard by injuries, and not been able to live up to pre-season expectations. Meanwhile, Asbury Park continues to roll toward the playoffs. Both teams played Highland Park earlier this year with the Blue Bishops pounding the Owls in the season opener while the Rams were routed by Highland Park in week two. The Bishops should stay undefeated here. Predicition: Asbury Park wins 34-13.
Montclair Kimberley (6-1) at St. Joseph’s (3-4)–This is one pick where I’m going out on a limb. The Falcons have played some tough opponents this year including Cushing Academy of Massachusetts and Blair Academy. Of those two games, St. Joe’s gave Cushing a tougher fight at home. The Falcons should do the same this week against Montclair-Kimberley. With basketball standouts, Matt Olivo, Matt Greene, and Al Myers leading the way, the Green Birds will be looking to even its record, and perhaps a winning campaign in its inaugural season. Prediction: St. Joseph’s wins 22-21.
GMC Hoops will be posting the preview of Friday night’s game shortly.
GMC Gridiron–Week Nine–Game Capsules–Friday Night
October 28, 2011 on 5:05 pm | In GMC Football | Comments OffBrief Look At Week Nine Contests Around The GMC On Friday Night
SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Gridiron returns to make his picks after going undefeated in week eight. We’re hoping to repeat at least a lot of last week’s success this week, and the schedule is favorable to do so. The site will be heading out to Edison High School to see the Eagles in action against the third ranked Woodbridge Barrons. It will be the second time that the site will be seeing both EHS and WHS in action this season. There are 14 games on tap for this week. Nine are on Friday night, five are on Saturday afternoon. Let’s take a look at this week’s outlook for Friday night’s games:
#3 Woodbridge (5-2) at Edison (2-4)–The Barrons are coming off a solid win at home over Monroe (42-10), where it didn’t even play the starters in the second half. Edison’s coaches were at Priscoe Field last week to see Woodbridge in action. The Eagles also played Monroe earlier in the season, and won 12-0. EHS will be playing at home, and with the likes of QB Ken McGotty and Amir Brown, the Eagles should be more competitive. However, Woodbridge still has too many weapons for the school’s all time passer, Kyle Anderson to throw to. The Barrons scored on their first six possessions last week including five TD passes by Anderson.Prediction: Woodbridge wins 35-14.
Point Pleasant Beach (5-1) at #7 Dunellen (6-0)–This game could be one of the few gems of the week with the Garnet Gulls already 2-0 against competition from the GMC including a 20-6 victory over Middlesex two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Dunellen had some difficulties against a Point Beach foe in Keansburg last week (36-28). However, the Destroyers are playing in the friendly confines of Columbia Park, and are also undefeated against the Shore this season. Vinnie Grausso, Jeff Puckett, D.J. Ditter, and Sean Gibney lead a veteran squad that reached the CJ Group I title game last year. Dunellen’s offense will be key here. If it controls the clock like it did against Highland Park two weeks ago, DHS will be tough to beat. Prediction: Dunellen wins 27-20.
Perth Amboy (4-2) at Bishop Ahr (3-4)–This game will be the big matchup in the GMC this week. Once again, the Trojans have their backs against the wall, but are at home, and have momentum heading into this contest. Amboy, led by QB Faustino Saucedo leads an explosive offense along with Rashad Adams and Ray Arce. Both squads played North Brunswick with Ahr winning on the road over the Raiders while Amboy lost to NBTHS at home. Each contest was quite exciting and par for the course in a division that has been much more competitive this year. The Panthers could use a win here to try to qualify for the North Jersey Section 2 Group IV tourney, which will be a tough bracket. BGA is trying to qualify for the Non-Public state playoffs. Prediction: Bishop Ahr wins 24-20.
#1 South Brunswick (6-0) at J.P. Stevens (2-4)–It is tailgate night at J.P. Stevens, and that might be the only good thing going for Hawks fans tonight. South Brunswick continues to roll after a 45-14 victory over Old Bridge last week, and it doesn’t look like it will stop here. The Vikes may be looking at a Central Jersey Group IV playoff showdown with Sayreville, which has been playing much better than the first time the Vikes and Bombers met on opening night. SBHS is too talented, athletic, and quick with the likes of Jevon Tyree, T.J. Taylor, Darrell Harper, and Dion Hooper. Prediction: South Brunswick wins 42-7.
#2 Sayreville (6-1) at Old Bridge (2-4)–Slowly, but surely, and most importantly, very quietly, the Bombers are positioning themselves for not only next week’s regular season finale against traditional division rival Piscataway, but also for a CJ Group IV playoff push that may end up with a rematch against South Brunswick. Delon Stephenson, Alex Yanuzzelli, Isaiah Cureton, Ismail Herring, and QB Mike Carey are playing much better than when we first saw them on opening night. Old Bridge is looking to spark the upset with Vince Gargano and Aaron Ford, but the home cooking won’t be enough. Prediction: Sayreville wins 42-7.
#4 Piscataway (4-2) at East Brunswick (0-6)–After losing in back to back weeks to South Brunswick and Woodbridge, the Chiefs have not only won three straight, but also have won them all handily by a combined margin of 115-7. With talent led by QB Nadir Barnwell, RB Tevin Shaw, and WRs Tajae Sharpe and Kyle LaPorte, the Chiefs will be tough to stop. East Brunswick is playing at home, and is led by QB Mike Cia. As with J.P. Stevens and Old Bridge, the home cooking will be enough to stop P-Way. Predicition: Piscataway wins 35-0.
South Plainfield (2-4) at #5 Carteret (7-0)–The Tigers showed some promise earlier in the season with two wins in its first four games including a surprise win over pre-season division favorite Bishop Ahr. However, a disappointing loss on the road at Kennedy (41-14) followed by a blowout loss at home to Colonia and Greg Jones, has put SPHS back into familiar territory. It won’t get any easier for SPHS this week. A trip to The Pit to face the fifth ranked Carteret Ramblers. Jerod Johnson leads a solid ground attack, and Tyler Rodriguez can throw the football if necessary. Dan Valles and Kevin Van Dyke anchor a tough defense. Prediction: Carteret wins 39-12.
#6 Colonia (5-1) at New Brunswick (0-7)–The Patriots continue to be one of the pleasant surprises in the GMC this season. After losing its opener on the road at Carteret, the Patriots have won five straight including three shutouts, and victories over two ranked squads as well as a pre-season division favorite. Greg Jones, who is also not a bad basketball player, scored seven touchdowns in the victory at South Plainfield last week. Trent Barneys leads the offense at QB. Christian Thomas and C.J. Cimilluca are also contributors for the Pats. New Brunswick is still searching for its first win of the season. Prediction: Colonia wins 49-13.
J.F. Kennedy (2-5) at #9 North Brunswick (3-3)–The Mustangs of JFK have had some good moments this year. They led Perth Amboy in the third quarter before losing 20-12. Kennedy took an early lead against Bishop Ahr, and almost went up 14-0 before losing by several scores, and then the Woodbridge Township school pounded South Plainfield at home before defeating New Brunswick. Mike Tenpenny, Nick Hart, and Jay Farley lead the Mustangs while Tim Parsons, La Shawn Boyd, and Devin Clark lead a high powered North Brunswick attack. The Raiders may have some struggles here, but should come out on top at home. Prediction: North Brunswicck wins 31-14.
GMC Hoops will be posting the preview of Friday night’s game later on.

October 21, 2011 on 5:20 pm | In GMC Football | Comments OffSOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Gridiron plans to head down to Woodbridge High School to see another matchup in the GMC Red between the Falcons of Monroe, a loser to top ranked South Brunswick last week and third ranked Woodbridge, which is looking to rebound after two straight losses to the Vikings and Sayreville. Weather Forecast–Woodbridge at 7:00 PM EDT on Friday night
Two storm systems moved through the Garden State within the past 48 hours, and they ushered in more fall like conditions to the Central Jersey area. It will be a bit more chilly on this Friday night as supposed to previous weeks this football season. Temperatures are expected to tumble into the mid to upper 40s by daybreak on Saturday morning. Skies will be mostly clear though. Some clouds as well as winds from 15 to 20 miles per hour will prevent temperatures from getting any colder. So, you will want to wear a sweater or sweatshirt. More rainfall has occurred to the north and west. See more details on the latest weather in the GWC Blog and Journal.

Game Outlook
The Monroe Falcons began the season with a victory on the road over neighborhood rival East Brunswick. Since then, the Falcons have lost five straight including a 12-0 defeat at the hands of Edison two weeks ago last night. Meanwhile, Woodbridge has also stumbled with two straight losses after a high flying 4-0 start that included victories over Old Bridge, J.P. Stevens, Piscataway, and East Brunswick.
Injuries to top standouts such as Anthony Nyers and Cody Zalasar put the Barrons in a difficult position against top ranked South Brunswisck and second ranked Sayreville. Woodbridge fought valiantly in defeat to the Vikings at home a couple weeks ago. Turnovers were the villain in WHS loss to Sayreville last week. Kyle Anderson set the school mark for passing while Nyers is the all time receiver at Woodbridge.
Monroe has a good deal of talent, but may be in over their head in the rough and tumble GMC Red. In the past two seasons, the Falcons are 6-10 overall since moving up to the Red Division.

GMC Gridiron–Week Eight–Game Capsules–Saturday And Sunday
October 21, 2011 on 4:59 pm | In GMC Football | Comments OffBrief Look At The Five Week Eight Contests Around The GMC On Saturday and Sunday
SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ–On Friday night, GMC Gridiron returns to make his picks after being away for several weeks. We’ll have more on that later on this weekend. The site will be heading out to Woodbridge High School to see the Barrons in action against the Monroe Falcons. It will be the first time that the site will be seeing WHS in action while it is the second time we’re seeing the Falcons. There are 12 games on tap for this week. Seven are on Friday night, four are on Saturday, and one is on Sunday. Let’s take a look at this week’s outlook for Saturday and Sunday afternoon’s games:
#5 Carteret (6-0) at Keyport (2-4)–Last year, this game was an upset special for GMC Hoops as the Ramblers stunned a solid Keyport squad. The win provided confidence and momentum to a Rambler team that went on to come from behind to upset North Plainfield on the road in the opening round of the Central Jersey Group II playoffs. The Red Raiders are hoping for revenge, but they lost handily to Metuchen on opening weekend. Meanwhile, Carteret downed Bishop Ahr en route to a likely GMC White Title. Jerod Johnson, Tyler Rodridguez, Dan Valles, Kevin Van Dyke, and Naji Johson lead the Ramblers, which should roll here. Prediction: Carteret wins 41-8.
New Brunswick (0-6) at J.F. Kennedy (1-5)–The Mustangs won their first game of the season two weeks ago by hammering South Plainfield at home (41-14). New Brunswick lost to the Tigers on the road. Kennedy also played division contenders Perth Amboy and Bishop Ahr tough on the road before losing. Mike Tenpenny and Nick Hart lead JFK. The Mustangs should win their second, especially playing at home. Prediction: J.F. Kennedy wins 40-12.
Spotswood (2-4) at Cardinal McCarrick (3-2)–The Chargers started the year on a positive note with an upset win at home over neighborhood rival, South River, and then soundly defeated Mater Dei. McCarrick has also beaten Mater Dei, but by a slimmer margin. Spotswood, led by quarterback, Dean Vitale showed some fight in the first half of a loss at home to Dunellen. Turnovers did them in. The Chargers also have depth and experience on their side. Prediction: Spotswood wins 34-6.
South River (1-5) at Metuchen (3-3)–The Bulldogs began to gradually improve late last season with a victory on the road at South River. The Rams, which were predicted to finish second in the GMC Blue in the pre-season by the Star-Ledger, have lost five of their first six including a lopsided loss at Dunellen last week. Taariq Phillips has been a bright spot for South River while Errol Lindo, Dorian Miller, and Adam Feltre lead the Bulldogs. Predicition: Metuchen wins 28-24.
Morristown-Beard (2-4) at St. Joseph’s (2-4)–After starting the season with two straight wins over Sussex Tech and Marlboro, the Falcons have lost four straight that included defeats to Cushing Academy of Massachusetts, Blair, and Cedar Creek of Atlantic County. Basketball standouts Matthew Greene, Matt Olivo, and Al Myers led the Green Birds. The Falcons should get back on track at home against Morristown-Beard. Prediction: St. Joseph’s wins 28-6.
GMC Hoops will be posting the preview of Friday night’s game shortly.

Let’s take a look at this week’s outlook for Friday night’s games:
Monroe (1-5) at #3 Woodbridge (4-2)–Last year, the Falcons rallied from behind at home to derail any playoff hopes for the Barrons. This year, Woodbridge is likely to qualify in what will be a very tough Central Jersey Group III field with the likes of many good teams from the Shore Conference. The team should be a bit healthier this week with the likes of Anthony Nyers back in the line-up and others such as Cody Zalasar returning. Woodbridge took it on the chin last week at Sayreville, but Kyle Anderson and the gang should get back on track here.Prediction: Woodbridge wins 34-7.
Old Bridge (2-3) at #1 South Brunswick (5-0)–Last week, the top ranked Vikings rolled to an easy win over Monroe on the road while the Knights defeated the Falcons in week two. However, South Brunswick is highly touted with wins over the other top squads in the GMC Red such as Sayreville, Piscataway, and Woodbridge. The Vikes are athletic, have plenty of speed and talent, and most importantly, tough on defense. SBHS does a great job of taking away your key skill position players. Vin Gargano and Aaron Ford will try to rally the Knights, which are coming off a loss to Manalapan last week. Prediction: South Brunswick wins 49-7.
East Brunswick (0-5) at #2 Sayreville (5-1)–The Bombers regained some of their swagger with a dominating effort against Woodbridge at home last week. After losing on opening night to top ranked South Brunswick, Sayreville has won five straight heading toward its annual showdown with Piscataway. Delon Stephenson, Alex Yanuzzelli, Zeke Perkinson, Isiah Cureton, and Mike Carey lead the charge for the Bombers. Mike Cia will try to throw a monkey wrench into the works for East Brunswick, which is still searching for its first win. Prediction: Sayreville wins 35-7.
#6 Colonia (4-1) at South Plainfield (2-3)–The Tigers took a step back in its resurgence a couple weeks ago with a surprisingly lopsided loss at J.F. Kennedy (41-14). Meanwhile, the Patriots have been one of the big surprises on the GMC Gridiron this fall. Colonia is led by Greg Jones, Trent Barneys, Christian Thomas, and C.J. Cimilluca. SPHS is at home, and have twin brothers Colin and Brendan Wilson along with the likes of Jamil Canes and Anthony Torchia. The Pats, which have only allowed 13 points in the last 16 quarters, should continue to roll here. Prediction: Colonia wins 24-6.
Bishop Ahr (2-4) at #8 North Brunswick (3-2)–This is probably the only real toss up game of the week. Both teams are fighting to get into the state playoffs. Ahr has lost two straight after evening its record at 2-2 earlier this season, has been up and down trying to adjust to the Wing-T offense while North Brunswick suffered two tough losses to Colonia (20-0) and Carteret (31-8) before knocking off Perth Amboy two weeks ago. Billy DeMato leads an Trojan offense that has weapons such as Kenny Virden, Roger Kilgore, Tim Hagerty, Dillon Salva, and Taylor Black. Meanwhile, LaShawn Boyd and Mike Parsons lead the Raiders. BGA is more desperate for a win here since a loss knocks them out of the playoffs. Prediction: Bishop Ahr wins 24-23.
Keansburg (1-4) at #7 Dunellen (5-0)–The Titans of Keansburg from the Shore Conference are coming off their first win of the season last week over Cardinal McCarrick. However, Dunellen represents a much bigger challenge with a roster that has 17 players returning from last year’s team including Vinnie Grausso, Jeff Puckett, Zach El-Halim, D.J. Ditter, and Sean Gibney. The Destroyers did a great job of controlling the ball in its win over Highland Park last week. DHS didn’t allow a single offensive touchdown to the Owls, and HPHS didn’t run an offensive play until the 9:47 mark of the second quarter. Predicition: Dunellen wins 50-6.
Highland Park (3-3) at Shore Regional (3-2)–It doesn’t get any easier for the Owls with a trip down to West Long Branch to take on the Blue Devils of Shore Regional. Shore is the defending Central Jersey Group I Champs with a victory over Dunellen in the final last December. Highland Park needs to utilize the special teams play of Quawi Batchelor, who accounted for the team’s only score against Dunellen last week with a 70 yard kickoff return for a TD in the first quarter. More importantly though, the Owls need to get their passing game going, and open holes for both Batchelor and Quatay Niesmith. Prediction: Shore Regional wins 35-17.
GMC Hoops will be posting the preview of Friday night’s game later on.

Due to an appointment, I wasn’t able to get down to this game until the start of the second half. By then, Edison was already leading 6-0, and went on to win 12-0. The Eagles made a couple interceptions near or in the end zone late in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.
GMC Gridiron Highlights–October 1, 2011–North Brunswick @ Carteret–White Division Clash
October 3, 2011 on 6:24 am | In GMC Football, Video Highlights | Comments OffHere are video highlights from Carteret’s 32-8 victory over North Brunswick. Running back Jerod Johnson ran for 177 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Ramblers to victory. All of his touchdowns were scored in the first half as Carteret took a 24-0 lead. Tim Parsons threw a TD pass for the Raiders to make it 24-8 at the intermission. North Brunswick had a chance to score again in the third quarter, but on a 4th and 9, Carteret intercepted Parsons, and returned it for a touchdown to put the game away.
GMC Gridiron Highlights–October 1, 2011–Dunellen @ Spotswood–Blue Diviison Clash
October 2, 2011 on 11:07 pm | In GMC Football, Video Highlights | Comments OffHere are video highlights from Saturday’s GMC Blue Division Clash between Dunellen and Spotswood. Already ahead by the score of 16-6 by close to the end of the first quarter, the Destroyers of DHS got a touchdown run for a 24-6 lead before Spotswood got a late touchdown to pull within a dozen at the half. Despite getting a good drive going to open the third, the Chargers couldn’t get closer as Dunellen scored 19 unanswered points for a 43-12 lead before Spotswood had a late fumble return for a touchdown to round out the 43-19 DHS victory.
