Arriving at the gym late following a hefty brunch at the local Texas Wieners, the first thing i saw was a 10-6 Middlesex lead. Matawan struck quickly with two three pointers off pretty assists from #5. After that though, it was pretty much all Blue Jays. With senior John Stockton, who had a team high 16 points including six in the first, the home team had a good scoring attack. In the second, the JV teams played with the Jays winning 10-7 largely in part to hard working guard Adam Wells who played every second in the two JV periods. The third period, the Jays won by a 10-4 score.Â
Despite being sloppy, Middlesex was able to get good shooting from senior Billy Lester. Lester, who became a starter when Class of 2008’s Justin Rojas was dismissed from the team, drilled a three, and a short time later junior Mike Perone followed suit. The next two periods were pretty much a walk in the park with senior Nick Fariella and junior Sparky Stockton creating indefensible matchup issues in the paint leading to 16 and 17 to 4 tilts in both frames respectively. The final period, played by the JV squads, saw Matawan jump out to a 6-0 lead before sloppy ballhandling and the quick hands of Middlesex’s Adam Wells, Rob Menditto and Brendon (transfer from Staten Island), helped the Blue Jays win the stanza on ten unanswered points.
