Former South River Hoops Standout Looks to Make Impact with Gothic Knights

JERSEY CITY, NJ–After being away from basketball for the better part of the last two years, South River’s Shawn Fenton is on the comeback trail. The 2010 SRHS graduate is now a sophomore at New Jersey City University, where he will be playing small forward. Fenton did have a setback earlier this fall, and had to have an orthoscopic procedure done on November 8th to repair an anterior talo-fibular ligament and clean out any other cartilage damage in his ankle. He is set to return to action on December 1st against Albertus Magnus College.

As a senior in high school at South River, Fenton averaged 17.1 points per game and 13.2 rebounds per game as he helped lead the Rams to their best finish in five years at the time at 12-15 including a Central Jersey Group I tournament opening round playoff game. The next year, Fenton moved on to Middlesex County College, where he teamed up with former J.P. Stevens standout, Myles Reuben to lead the Blue Colts to a 10-15 overall record including an 8-14 mark in the Region 19 Division III standings. At MCC in 2010-11, Fenton played in 21 games and averaged 10.3 points per game.

Fenton also tallied up an average of 7.1 rebounds per game, 1.3 assists per game, and just under a block per game. He ranked third in scoring at MCC that season behind Reuben (15.8 ppg) and Yusuf Leary (11.9 ppg), and was tops on the team in rebounding. Fenton also ranked third in blocks and sixth in assists. His best performance that season was in an 81-74 overtime loss on January 20, 2011 to Sussex County College when he connected on 11 of 24 shots including a three for 24 points while also collecting 13 rebounds. Fenton has some company from the GMC playing at NJCU.

Former Colonia standout, David Cole is in his junior year at the school, and has played in all five games so far this season averaging 8.0 points per game, and 1.6 rebounds per game. Spotswood’s Ike Ejikeme is also on the Gothic Knights roster, and has briefly played in one game. Woodbridge hoops standout, Eddie Harris is also at the school, but is being redshirted. So far this season, New Jersey City University is undefeated at 5-0 with its most recent victory, a come from behind effort over Rutgers-Newark on November 26th (61-52).
