MCC Summer League–June 25, 2009–South River Rolls Past South Amboy

Walsh Leads Rams With Fine Shooting Effort In Win Over South Amboy, 41-25

EDISON, NJ–The Rams behind the hot shooting of guard Brandon Walsh rolled over South Amboy Thursday night, with an easy 41-25 win.

South River was back at full strength with the return of Stevie Moore (who still appeared to be bothered by a wrist injury sustained a week earlier), while getting Walsh, Xavier Foster, and Shawn Fenton for a full game.

This contest was never in doubt as the Rams led from the outset and never looked back. The Guvs, which were overmatched just struggled against the new look Rams. The Governors quickly fell behind 11-0 and never were able to recover or mount a serious challenge to South River the rest of the way.

South Amboy played a sloppy game – missing a lot of shots and committing countless turnovers, upsetting their coach who was very vocal from the sidelines, shouting his displeasure. The sloppiness seemed to be catchy as the Rams also had trouble shooting and controlling the basketball after opening up the early 11-0 lead. Not a good game all around by both teams.

The referees can also take some of the blame for ruining the tempo of the game. Questionable fouls called against both teams in the second half led to the game getting a bit out of hand in the closing minutes, as Rams’ Shawn Fenton was called for back to back technical fouls which resulted in his removal from the game.

The bright spot on offense for South River was Brandon Walsh who had an exceptional game, scoring 21 points on torrid shooting from the floor, while hitting all his free throws. Walsh has played very well in the summer league thus far – playing with confidence, while stepping up his game on offense.

The Rams improve to 3-1 with the win and take on Sayreville Tuesday night at 7PM.
