Sayreville Finishes Up Spring at Kean

Bombers Lose to Watchung Hills in Finale; Fail to Qualify for Playoffs

UNION, NJ–On Monday night, the playoffs began at the 2016 Kean University’s Spring League, but the party went on without the Sayreville Bombers, which didn’t qualify. The Bombers lost their season finale to Watchung Hills by double digits to conclude the spring at 2-5.

With wins over Roselle in the season opener, and Barringer I in night four, the Bombers stood at 2-2 on the season, but then lost three straight to Barringer II, Newark Arts, and Watchung Hills. Sayreville’s other two losses were to Millburn and Verona. The lone representative from the GMC in the league, played admirably though without the likes of sophomores Elijah Clark and Derek Astarita.

Standing tall this spring for Sayreville were Ryan O’Leary, Jahsim Floyd, Ope Olaloko, and Henny Mautes. Some newcomers that are drawing some attention include Zac Kaczmarek, Sayreville’s JV MVP for the 2015-16, and Bobby Krolick, a transfer from Bishop Ahr this past season. The best performance of the season may have come in the win over Barringer I on May 2nd.

In that game, Sayreville defeated Barringer, 66-56. Ryan O’Leary scored 25 points. Jahsim Floyd scored 14 points and 8 blocks. Henny Mautes tallied 13 points and 6 assists. Despite the ups and downs at Kean this spring, expect the Bombers to be in the thick of things again in the GMC White next year. The Bombers return a lot next year including O’Leary and Floyd, and with only Woodbridge returning as much, they should be a favorite to win in 2016-17.
