South Amboy’s Gasiewski Having Breakout Season

Sophomore Sharpshooter Has Helped Guvs Overachieve

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ–Over the summer, the feeling around South Amboy was that the Guvs were going to have their work cut out for them in 2016-17. With the graduation of Keahre Ford and the departure of Julian Munoz, the Governors were going to have to find ways to make up for all that scoring punch lost.

Enter sophomore guard, Kyle Gasiewski. After playing well during the summer at the Raritan Bay Summer League and in the fall at the Monroe Sports Center Fall League, Gasiewski hit the ground running on opening weekend with a 18 point performance including four threes in a loss to Calvary Christian.

From that point on, Gasiewski continued to put up big numbers. Through play on Monday night, the South Amboy sophomore had played in all 15 games, made 38 field goals, 44 three pointers, and 43 foul shots for a total of 270 points, or an average of 18 points per game.

Gasiewski has netted at least two threes in a game 12 times this season. He has scored in double figures in 13 of South Amboy’s 15 games including six games where he scored 20 points or more. Gasiewski has scored his season high of 24 points three times this season.

Perhaps his best shooting performance of the year was against Highland Park on. January 11th, where he not only matched his season high of 24 points, but he netted a season high six three pointers. He also connected on five threes in a game against East Brunswick Tech on January 18th, and made four threes in a game five times so far this season.

His breakout season this year has been a big reason why South Amboy’s boys basketball team has exceeded expectations. Picked to finish seventh in the GMC Gold this year by GMC Hoops, the Guvs were battling with Piscataway Tech for third place in the division on Monday night. South Amboy is currently 6-9 overall including a 5-6 mark in the Gold Division.

In addition to his success this year on the hardwood, Gasiewski also excels on the baseball diamond. One of the top freshmen in the GMC a year ago, Gasiewski was a solid pitcher for the Guvs as he compiled a 5-1 record. He pitched 40.1 innings, gave up only 25 hits, 9 runs with 8 of them earned, walked 15, and struck out 40.
