2021 John “Butch” Kowal Holiday Tourney Schedule and Bracket

Perth Amboy Representing GMC Again in This Year’s Tourney at Rahway

RAHWAY, NJ—On Wednesday evening, GMC Hoops received the schedule for the 2021 John “Butch” Kowal Holiday Tournament scheduled to take place over the holidays on December 27th and 29th at Rahway High School.  Perth Amboy is the only school from the Greater Middlesex Conference that will be competing in this holiday tourney last played in 2019 when Rahway won the title.

The Perth Amboy Panthers will open up tourney play in the first game against A.L. Johnson on Monday, December 27th at 6:00 PM.  Later on in the evening, in the nightcap contest, the host school Rahway will take on Westfield at 7:30 PM.  Three of the four teams in this tourney:  A.L. Johnson, Perth Amboy, and Rahway played in the 2021 Rahway Summer League.

Another interesting fact about the teams playing in the tournament:  The same four teams playing in this year’s tourney, competed in the last Kowal Holiday Tournament two years ago with Rahway winning the crown by defeating Perth Amboy (70-47) in the opening round, and then edging Westfield (43-42) in the Championship while Amboy held on to defeat Johnson (55-52) to win the 3rd Place Consolation.

A number of teams from the Greater Middlesesex Conference including Colonia, J.P. Stevens, North Brunswick, South Plainfield, St. Peter’s (now closed), and now Perth Amboy have or are currently competing in the John “Butch” Kowal Tournament over the years with South Plainfield winning the title in 2002, 2003, and 2004.

The winners of the two opening round games will then play in the Championship Game at 7:30 PM on December 29th while the opening round losers will face off prior to the final in a Consolation Game for 3rd Place at 6:00 PM.  Special thanks to Rahway assistant boys basketball coach, Clint Robinson for providing the information on this year’s tourney.
