Rams Survive Scare From East Brunswick Tech, 38-33
EDISON, NJ–South River got a huge scare Tuesday night from a talented East Brunswick Vo-Tech team, but still managed to pull away in the closing minutes for a 38-33 win.
In what was a rough game from the start, neither the Rams or EB Tech were able to take control as each team missed baskets and committed multiple turnovers throughout the first half. It was a battle that was unfortunately too ugly at times.
EB Tech brought along numerous varsity players that hadn’t played in the earlier summer league games. It may have backfired in this case because they looked like a team hadn’t played together since last basketball season. They could never seem to get things together, especially on offense.
South River again seemed to be suffering from another bout of playing down to their opponents. They couldn’t get their offense going either and again played sloppy basketball on both sides of the court.
It was a seesaw battle and the teams went in at the half tied 16-16.
More of the same followed in the second half. The Rams would go up by two points and then EB Tech would come back and tie the score and then go up by two themselves. Again neither team was able to dominate through most of the second half.
But trailing by four with under three minutes left in the second half, South River went on a 9-0 run to go up by five, 36-31. EB Tech went cold from the floor and could manage only two more points the rest of the way, as the Rams finally gained control of the game.
Shawn Fenton’s dunk with no time remaining on the clock sealed the win for the Rams, 38-33.
Fenton paced all South River scorers with eighteen points, while Brandon Walsh had an off night scoring only eight points for the Rams.
With the win, the Rams locked up the #2 seed in the upcoming playoff round and would play the winner of the South Brunswick/St. Joseph’s match up on Thursday night 7/16.
