Sayreville Hoops Alum and His Squad Move On to Round of 16

COLUMBUS, OH—On Saturday, the Fourth of July Holiday of 2020 got a much needed boost as The Basketball Tournament (TBT) got underway at the Ohio Bubble with the first four games in the Round of 24. With much of the country in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic, many tuned in to watch the event. Many beaches in coastal communities were closed forcing many to find other forms of holiday entertainment.

Spotlight on TBT

Not only were many of the eyes of the American public on this event, but also officials and players in other sports. Watching with keen interest was the NBA, which is planning to reboot its season later this month. All of the higher seeds won in this preliminary round yesterday. Sayreville’s Floyd and Big X advance in TBT. The day began with 9th seeded Big X rallied from behind to defeat 24th seeded D2, 79-74. Afterwards, 12th seeded Brotherly Love cruised to a double digit, 87-71 victory over 21st seeded Stillwater Stars in first doubleheader’s nightcap.

In the second doubleheader of the day, 16th seeded House of ‘Paign (Illinois alumni), rolled past 17th seeded War Tampa (Auburn alumni), 76-53. House of ‘Paign’s win set the stage for a date with top seeded and defending champ, Carmen’s Crew on Wednesday, July 8th at 4:00 PM. Finally, in the the last game of the day, 13th seeded Team CP3, run by Chris Paul, rallied from a double digit deficit to defeat 20th seeded Primetime Players, 76-74.

Floyd Only GMC Standout Remaining

With yesterday’s results in addition to the Playing for Jimmy V squad being replaced by the Peoria All-Stars after a player tested positive for COVID-19, Sayreville’s Jehyve Floyd, is the only former player from the Greater Middlesex Conference still competing in the event. Playing for the Big X squad, Floyd contributed to his team’s win. The two time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, made his only field goal attempt for 2 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and made a huge block to help his team advance. Moving on to the Round of 16, Big X will now face 8th seeded Red Scare, a team of University of Dayton Alumni, on Wednesday at 2:00 PM.

Big X Overcomes Slow Start to Advance

Things didn’t start out well for Floyd and his Big X teammates. Shots were falling early for a very competitive D2 squad en route to a 19-6 first period lead. D2’s advantage then increased to 15 in the second quarter. However, led by Nick Ward, who played college ball at Michigan State, Big X was able to rally for the win. Ward finished a team high 18 points along with 5 rebounds. Meanwhile Javon Bess (Michigan State/Saint Louis) chipped in with 11 points, and Khalil Iverson (Wisconsin) added 7 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Kevin Capers of Florida Southern College led all scorers with a game high 25 points. Meanwhile, teammate Mike Davis, who played at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina, chipped in with 15 points in defeat. Big X showed more balance with 10 different players scoring during the contest. Wrapping up the victory for Big X was Ohio State alum, C.J. Jackson with a floater in Elam Ending time. Floyd and Big X Advance in TBT by outscoring D2, 49-38 in the 2nd half, and by a 68-51 margin over the last three periods.

Team CP3 Wins in Another Thriller

Team CP3 and Primetime Players combined for the other Round of 24 thriller. For the 2nd straight year, Team CP3 rallied from an 18 point first half deficit for the thrilling come from behind win. Leading the way in the 76-74 victory was Minnesota alum, Nate Mason with a game high 26 points. Putting a bow on the victory was C.J. Harris with an Elam Ending jam off a steal by Codi Miller-McIntyre. The 13th seeded team advances to the Round of 16 on Monday night when it will take on 4th seeded Golden Eagles (Marquette Alumni) at 9:00 PM.
