Decisive 3rd Quarter Lifts Guvs Past Jaguars in Non-Conference Season Opener

BRIDGEWATER, NJ—Trailing 37-34 at the half, South Amboy put together a decisive 16-7 showing in the third quarter, and then held off Somerset Tech in the fourth quarter for a hard fought 62-60 victory in a non-conference season opener.

Freshman guard, Artis Ray, led the Governors with a team high 20 points including five threes while also collecting 7 assists and 3 rebounds. Senior Josh Jimenez chipped in with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Another Freshman, Brandon Gasiewski, added 14 points including four treys along with two assists and a steal.

Somerset Tech, which defeated another GMC Gold foe, Perth Amboy Tech, in the opening round of the 2019 Central Jersey Group 1 state tournament, was led in defeat by 6’5” senior center, Norbert Malik, who turned in a big time performance with a double-double of 28 points and 16 rebounds while also picking up 3 steals, 2 blocks, and an assist.

Meanwhile, 5’10” senior guard, Andy Tombeng chipped in for the Jaguars with 11 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals in a losing cause. South Amboy connected on 9 threes, all by freshman guards, Ray and Gasiewski. With the win, South Amboy starts the season at 1-0 while Somerset Tech begins at 0-1. The Guvs return to action on Saturday at 4:00 PM against GMC Gold rival, Piscataway Tech in the 2nd game of the 2019 Friends of South Amboy Benefit Showcase.
