P-Way Veterans Key Comeback Victory Over Montgomery, 45-40

In the nightcap game on Tuesday night at the Bound Brook Summer League, Piscataway brought a boat load of players to its matchup with Montgomery. The unofficial tally that GMC Hoops had was 24 kids in total including 19 that were on the bench. Many of them got the chance to compete as coaches Dennis Wells and Jeff Adkins, Sr. gave them all a chance to get a bit of experience playing against varsity competition. Despite the influx of youth for much of the game, Piscataway hung close until about midway through the second half when the Cougars from Southwestern Somerset County and the Delaware East Division of the Skyland Conference, came up with several threes to take a 33-22 lead at the 12:28 mark. However, the Chiefs eventually brought in their varsity veterans including: Jeff Adkins Jr., Thomas Bennett, Wayne Newsome, and Jamar Rose, and they all came to the rescue with a 15-0 run to close the game for a 45-40 victory.

Montgomery jumped out to an 18-15 first half lead, and then scored the first points of the second half on a field goal at about the 18:30 mark for a 20-15 advantage. The Chiefs then came back down on its next possession, and registered a three point play to close the gap to two at 20-18 with 18:03 left in the contest. The Chief youngsters showed a lot of heart and hustle, especially in one instance with 16:26 remaining, but struggled to put the ball in the basket. The Cougars then eventually went up by four with a layup at the 16:05 mark for a 22-18 lead. Twenty seconds later, Montgomery was back on the board again after grabbing a rebound of a missed P-Way shot, and taking it the length of the court for a layup and a 24-18 lead with 15:45 remaining. The Chiefs would be next to get on the board with a layup nearly two minutes later for a 24-20 Montgomery lead at the 14:03 mark.

Over the next 1:35, the Cougars put the Chiefs in a very precarious situation by embarking on a crucial 9-2 spurt that consisted of a three pointer from the right wing at the 13:42 mark, another three from the right side at the 12:48 mark, and then one more trey from the right wing at the 12:28 mark for a seemingly comfortable, 33-22 lead. The only bucket the Chiefs had during this span was at the 13:23 mark on a turnaround jumper in the right low block that banked in to make the score, 27-22 at the time. Following that trey though, the Piscataway veterans came off the bench during a timeout at the 12:19 mark, and gradually reversed the tide. Jeff Adkins, Jr., who has taken his game up a level during this off-season now with the understanding that he will be the floor general for the Chiefs in 2008-09, grabbed a rebound, and pushed the ball upcourt to set up an eventual layup by Jamar Rose at the 11:42 mark for a 33-24 Montgomery lead.

On a subsequent Montgomery possession, Piscataway’s Wayne Newsome came up with a block, and then another P-Way player drew a charge to force a Montgomery turnover at the 11:11 mark. Thirteen seconds afterward, Adkins recorded an assist on a layup by Rose that made the score, 33-26 with 10:58 to play. The Cougars would answer that score though with a prompt reply that consisted of a pump fake that got Newsome flailing in the air for a block, and then the Montgomery player went under the soon to be Piscataway junior, and got the layin for a 35-26 lead with 10:32 to go. Montgomery then went back up by eleven with a nice pass upcourt for a layup that made the score, 37-26 at the 8:45 mark. Moments later, Bennett swiped a steal at midcourt, which ultimately led to an offensive rebound and putback by Newsome for a 37-28 Montgomery edge with 8:01 to go. Following a Cougar timeout at the 7:35 mark, Adkins got the Chiefs on the board again with 6:20 to play as he drove hard through the middle for a layin attempt that drew a foul, and resulted in two free throws for a 37-30 Montgomery lead.

Neither team would score for almost a minute and fifteen seconds, Montgomery connected on a clutch three pointer from the left corner for a 40-30 with 5:07 to play. What had seemed to be a very critical blow struck by the Cougars with a running clock, and a now double digit lead, wound up being the final points scored by the Somerset County team on the night. Piscataway surged to victory from there with 15 unanswered points to close things out for the win. Sparking the rally was Newsome, who has improved his stroke at the line. The phenom, who has been waiting in the wings for the past two seasons, made a nice baseline move along the left side for a layup attempt that drew a foul, and resulted in two free throws for a 40-32 Cougar lead at the 4:44 mark. The Chiefs then got a steal, and assist on a layup that made the score, 40-34 with 4:08 to go.

Following a Piscataway timeout at the 3:45 mark, Adkins came up with a loose ball off a rebound, took it straight into the teeth of the Montgomery interior defense, and elevated for a layup that pulled his team to within four at 40-36 with 3:31 to play. Adkins then registered a steal and assist on a score by Bennett as he was fouled for a three point play that made it a one point game at 40-39 with 2:46 left. Fifty seconds later, the Chiefs swiped a steal, but couldn’t convert it as the pass upcourt to Newsome was a bit too far at the 1:55 mark. However, the Chiefs pressure never relented, and P-Way would redeem itself by taking the lead for good as Bennett stole an errant pass for a layup from the left side, and a 41-40 lead with 1:14 remaining. Montgomery tried to retake the lead by taking another jumper from long range, but it was off the mark, and rebounded by Rose, who then was fouled. The result was a pair of free throws with 46.8 seconds to play, and a 43-40 lead.

Piscataway then sealed the win as Montgomery missed a chance at a tie with a three point attempt at the 30 second mark, and Newsome eventually got the ball, drove baseline on the left side, and dished to Rose for the layin that closed out the 45-40 victory. With the win, P-Way moves into a three way tie for first place at 2-0 while Montgomery falls to 1-2.
